Abstract:
An article based on the introductory chapter to a new edition of Herzl's diaries (Jerusalem: Mossad Bialik, 1997-1999). Follows Theodor Herzl's transformation from an insignificant journalist into a self-made leader of a national movement, as reflected in introspections on his trials and errors found in his diaries. The diaries do not mention the Dreyfus Affair as the source of Herzl's change of heart regarding the solution to the "Jewish problem" - from assimilation to the need for a national territory. According to the diaries, the effects of German antisemitism on the unstable political arena of the Habsburg Empire endangered the future of the Jews in Germany, Austria, and Russia, and therefore a solution was required that would not depend on an emancipation that failed to prove itself. Suggests that the first generation of Zionist leaders, many of whom were German Jews and therefore probably interested in diverting attention from the situation in Germany and Austria, may have been responsible for the emphasis of Zionist historiography on the role played by the Dreyfus Affair on changing Herzl's views.
