Abstract:
Discusses antisemitism in Great Britain from 1881-1917, a period when many Jewish immigrants, mainly from Eastern Europe, arrived in the country. Notes that the antisemitism was not spread by the government, but by various British intellectuals who blamed the Jews for the definciencies of capitalism, modernism, and democracy. These British antisemites saw the Jews as a separate race attempting to take over the country, and many of them felt that Zionism was the best answer to the "Jewish question". Compares the views of these antisemites, who supported the idea of Jews living in their own, autonomous territory, with those of the Jewish Zionist and territorialist Israel Zangwill. While Zangwill viewed territorialism as a way of saving Jews fleeing from Eastern European pogroms, British antisemites saw it as a way to get rid of the Jews.
