Abstract:
A critique of the recent production of the play by the Royal Shakespeare Company, directed by David Thacker. This is a modernized version, set in a section of Lloyds Bank, with money (rather than Shylock) as the main protagonist. Shylock is a businessman whose desire for vengeance arises from the blatant antisemitism in the City and from the loss of his daughter. States that although this production has merits, none of the efforts to humanize Shylock can change the fact that the play is a melodrama with Shylock cast as the hated villain. In this age of rising neo-fascism in Europe, questions whether the play should be produced at all.
