Kurzfassung:
Deals mainly with the Jewish collective identity and Holocaust consciousness of American Jewish Zionist and non-Zionist intellectuals as reflected in their responses to the kidnapping of Eichmann by the State of Israel in 1960 and the Israeli authorities' justification of their claims to judge Eichmann in Israel according to international law, in the name of the people of Israel around the world and as representatives of all Holocaust victims. Presents the stances of Oscar Handlin, Marie Syrkin, Ben Halpern, Paul F. Jacobs, Daniel Bell, Norm Fruchter, as well as the positions taken by the American Jewish Committee, the Anti-Defamation League, and the American Council for Judaism. also presents results of polls conducted by the latter organizations in the USA; and the positions of David Ben-Gurion, Gershom Sholem and of the Israeli Supreme Court of Justice with regard to the kidnapping of Eichmann and Israel's arguments concerning his trial by Israel and in Israel. Contains an expanded discussion of Hannah Arendt's stance. Concludes that, in general, the discourse points out two opposite sets of arguments: those of the anti-Zionists, who questioned the claim of the State of Israel to represent the people of Israel with regard to the Holocaust; and the positions voiced by the Zionists who observed various possible links between the State of Israel, the Holocaust, the people of Israel and the Jewish Diaspora.
