    Abstract: Am 17. Februar 2019 wäre Walter Grab 100 Jahre alt geworden. Sein persönlicher Werdegang spiegelt die Herausforderungen und politischen Verwerfungen des 20. Jahrhunderts wider. Als Historiker hat er wichtige Beiträge zur Demokratiegeschichte und ihrer Verbindung zur Emanzipation der Juden geleistet. Insbesondere die Französische Revolution und ihre Wirkungsgeschichte haben ihn lebenslang beschäftigt. Dabei stand auch die Frage im Mittelpunkt, weshalb die Ideen der Revolution in Deutschland nicht den gleichen Erfolg hatten wie etwa in Frankreich oder England. Diese Forschungen verknüpfte er mit einem anderen großen Thema, zu dem er ebenfalls bedeutende Beiträge geleistet hat: Dem Verhältnis zwischen der Demokratiebewegung und der Emanzipation der Juden in Europa. Im Rahmen eines interdisziplinären Kolloquiums am Europa Kolleg und dem Institut für die Geschichte der deutschen Juden in Hamburg wurden seine Arbeiten gewürdigt und mit der Frage nach der Zukunft der Demokratie in Europa verknüpft werden. Der Band stellt die Ergebnisse einer breiteren Öffentlichkeit vor. Mit einem Grußwort des Kultursenators Dr. Carsten Brosda. Mit Beiträgen von Carsten Brosda, Uwe Friesel, Alexander Grab, Andreas Grimmel, Arno Herzig, Yael Kupferberg und Rainer Nicolaysen.
    Abstract: On February 17, 2019, Walter Grab would have turned 100. His personal career reflects the challenges and political upheavals of the 20th century. As a historian, he made important contributions to the history of democracy and its connection to the emancipation of the Jews. In particular, the French Revolution and its history of impact have occupied him throughout his life. He also focused on the question of why the ideas of the Revolution did not have the same success in Germany as they did, for example, in France or England. He linked this research to another major topic to which he also made significant contributions: The relationship between the democracy movement and the emancipation of Jews in Europe. In the context of an interdisciplinary colloquium at the Europa Kolleg Hamburg and the Institute for the History of German Jews in Hamburg, his work was honored and linked to the question of the future of democracy in Europe. This volume presents the results to a broader public. With a greeting by the Senator for Culture Dr. Carsten Brosda. With contributons by Carsten Brosda, Uwe Friesel, Alexander Grab, Andreas Grimmel, Arno Herzig, Yael Kupferberg and Rainer Nicolaysen.

    Abstract: Leviathan, a manifestation of one of the oldest monsters in recorded history (3rd millennium BCE), and its sidekick, Behemoth, have been the object of centuries of suppression throughout the millennia. Originally cosmic, terrifying creatures who represented disorder and chaos, they have been converted into the more palatable crocodile and hippo by biblical scholars today. However, among the earliest Jews (and Muslims) and possibly Christians, these creatures occupied a significant place in creation and redemption history. Before that, they formed part of a backstory that connects the Bible with the wider ancient Near East. When examining the reception history of these fascinating beasts, several questions emerge. Why are Jewish children today familiar with these creatures, while Christian children know next to nothing about them? Why do many modern biblical scholars follow suit and view them as minor players in the grand scheme of things? Conversely, why has popular culture eagerly embraced them, assimilating the words as symbols for the enormous? More unexpectedly, why have fundamentalist Christians touted them as evidence for the cohabitation of dinosaurs and humans?

    Abstract: A series of numbers was tattooed on prisoners' forearms only at one location - the Auschwitz concentration camp complex. Children, parents, grandparents, mostly Jews but also a significant number of non-Jews scarred for life. Indelibly etched with a number into their flesh and souls, constantly reminding them of the horrors of the Holocaust. References to the Auschwitz number appear in artworks from the Holocaust period and onwards, by survivors and non-survivor artists, and Jewish and non-Jewish artists. These artists refer to the number from Auschwitz to portray the Holocaust and its meaning. This book analyzes the place that the image of the Auschwitz number occupies in the artist's consciousness and how it is grasped in the collective perception of different societies. It discusses how the Auschwitz number is used in public and private Holocaust commemoration. Additionally, the book describes the use of the Auschwitz number as a Holocaust icon to protest, warn, and fight against Holocaust denial
    Abstract: Eine Generation - Juden und Nicht-Juden gleichermaßen - für das Leben gezeichnet: eine Zahl, die im Konzentrationslager Auschwitz unauslöschlich in Fleisch und Seele eingraviert wurde, eine ständige Erinnerung an die Schrecken des Holocaust. Seit der Zeit der Shoah finden sich Bezüge zur Auschwitz-Nummer in vielen Kunstwerken - von Überlebenden und Nachgeborenen, von jüdischen und nicht-jüdischen Künstler/-innen. Der vorliegende Band analysiert den Stellenwert dieses Motivs im Bewusstsein der Künstler/-innen sowie im kollektiven Bewusstsein. Das Buch kompensiert den Mangel an umfassender Forschungsarbeit zu visuellen Darstellungen der Auschwitz-Nummer in der Kunst und untersucht die Art und Weise, wie Künstler/-innen dieses Motiv für die Auseinandersetzung mit zeitgenössischen Themen nutzen.

    Abstract: Der Centralverein deutscher Staatsbürger jüdischen Glaubens (C. V.) wurde 1893 als Reaktion auf den Antisemitismus im Kaiserreich gegründet. Ganz den Prinzipien des Liberalismus verpflichtet, war er der Ansicht, den Anfeindungen durch Aufklärung und juristische Gegenwehr begegnen zu können. Der schnelle Zuwachs überraschte, führte aber dazu, dass der Centralverein zu einer der größten jüdischen Organisationen wurde. Dieser Erfolg fußte nicht nur auf der Abwehrarbeit, vielmehr repräsentierte der Centralverein eine selbstbewusste jüdische Identität innerhalb der Gesellschaft. Diese Symbiose aus Deutschtum und Judentum entsprach der Mehrheit des deutschen Judentums und so wurde der C. V. zu einem Hauptprotagonisten des deutsch-jüdischen Kultursystems. Umso mehr wundert es, dass er in der bisherigen Forschung als Organisation, als Geistesströmung und auch als politischer Akteur bis heute unterrepräsentiert blieb und oftmals nur im Lichte der gescheiterten Abwehrarbeit betrachtet wurde

    Abstract: Federica Francesconi writes the history of the Jewish merchants who lived and prospered in the northern Italian city of Modena, capital city of the Este Duchy, during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Her protagonists are men and women who stood out within their communities but who, despite their cultural and economic prominence, were ghettoized after 1638. Their sociocultural transformation and eventual legal and political integration evolved through a complex dialogue between their Italian and Jewish identities, and without the traumatic ruptures or dramatic divides that led to the assimilation and conversion of many Jews elsewhere in Europe.In Modena, male and female Jewish identities were contoured by both cultural developments internal to the community and engagement with the broader society. The study of Lurianic and Cordoverian Kabbalah, liturgical and nondevotional Hebrew poetry, and Sabbateanism existed alongside interactions with Jesuits, converts, and inquisitors. If Modenese Jewish merchants were absent from the public discourse of the Estes, their businesses lives were nevertheless located at the very geographical and economic center of the city. They lived in an environment that gave rise to unique forms of Renaissance culture, early modern female agency, and Enlightenment practice. New Jewish ways of performing gender emerged in the seventeenth century, giving rise to what could be called an entrepreneurial female community devoted to assisting, employing, and socializing in the ghetto. Indeed, the ghetto leadership prepared both Jewish men and women for the political and legal emancipation they would eventually obtain under Napoleon. It was the cultured Modenese merchants who combined active participation in the political struggle for Italian Jewish emancipation with the creation of a special form of the Enlightenment embedded in scholarly and French-oriented lay culture that emerged within the European context

    Abstract: The Jewish intellectual tradition has a long and complex history that has resulted in significant and influential works of scholarship. In this book, the authors suggest that there is a series of common principles that can be extracted from the Jewish intellectual tradition that have broad, even life-changing, implications for individual and societal achievement.     Abstract: In Warsaw Ghetto Police, Katarzyna Person shines a spotlight on the lawyers, engineers, young yeshiva graduates, and sons of connected businessmen who, in the autumn of 1940, joined the newly formed Jewish Order Service.Person tracks the everyday life of policemen as their involvement with the horrors of ghetto life gradually increased. Facing and engaging with brutality, corruption, and the degradation and humiliation of their own people, these policemen found it virtually impossible to exercise individual agency. While some saw the Jewish police as fellow victims, others viewed them as a more dangerous threat than the German occupation authorities; both were held responsible for the destruction of a historically important and thriving community. Person emphasizes the complexity of the situation, the policemen's place in the network of social life in the ghetto, and the difficulty behind the choices that they made. By placing the actions of the Jewish Order Service in historical context, she explores both the decisions that its members were forced to make and the consequences of those actions.Featuring testimonies of members of the Jewish Order Service, and of others who could see them as they themselves could not, Warsaw Ghetto Police brings these impossible situations to life. It also demonstrates how a community chooses to remember those whose allegiances did not seem clear

Wherever an individual or community may be located, it would seem, there is always the dream of being elsewhere. This has been especially true throughout the ages for Jews, for whom the promises and perils of travel have influenced both their own sense of self and their identity in the eyes of others.How does travel writing, as a genre, produce representations of the world of others, against which one's own self can be invented or explored? And what happens when Jewish authors in particular—whether by force or of their own free will, whether in reality or in the imagination—travel from one place to another? How has travel figured in the formation of Jewish identity, and what cultural and ideological work is performed by texts that document or figure specifically Jewish travel?     Abstract: Die Publikation schlüsselt das Lebenswerk des Hebraisten Elias Hutter auf und ordnet es in den historischen Kontext ein.Im späten 16. Jahrhundert wollte Hutter das Studium des Hebräischen revolutionieren. Getragen von der Idee, dass das biblische Hebräisch als göttliche Ursprache den Weg zur Einheit von Sprache und Religion aufzeigt, entwickelte er neue didaktische Methoden zur Vereinfachung des Hebräischstudiums. Am Anfang seines Wirkens steht die 1587 in Hamburg veröffentlichte „Biblia Sacra – Derekh ha-Kodesh“. In dieser Edition der Hebräischen Bibel entwickelte er ein bis heute einzigartiges Druckbild, um die Morphologie des Hebräischen zu illustrieren. Weitere Arbeiten folgten, u.a. Lexika und Polyglotten, in denen Hutter das Sprachenstudium mit seiner These von der einheitsstiftenden göttlichen Ursprache verband. Sein Werk ist somit im Grenzbereich zwischen neuzeitlicher Sprachwissenschaft und religiöser Spekulation einzuordnen. Der historische Vergleich zeigt, dass er ein Vertreter der frühneuzeitlichen christlichen Hebraistik ist und kein „Phantast“ seiner Zeit war.Die Publikation führt nicht nur in Hutters Werk ein, sondern bietet zudem einen Überblick über Methoden und Konzeptionen der frühneuzeitlichen christlichen Hebraistik

He believed that Hebrew, as the original divine language, was the answer to his question, and wanted to revolutionize its study.     Abstract: Bisherige Betrachtungen einer jüdischen Rezeptionsgeschichte Jonas beschränken sich auf die Deskription vermeintlich wichtigster oder bekanntester Rezeptionsquellen. AUS DEM LEBEN DES BUCHES JONA untersucht die frühjüdischen und rabbinischen Rezeptionen des biblischen Propheten Jona auf ihre überlieferungsdynamischen Aushandlungsprozesse und ermittelt, woraufhin und mit welcher traditionsdynamischen Konsequenz im Wandel soziokultureller Kontexte rezipiert wurde. Die Rezeptionsgeschichte wird dabei, in Abgrenzung zur Auslegungs- und Wirkungsgeschichte, als Arbeitsfeld und nicht als Gegenstand der Forschung verstanden. Einer eigens entwickelten Methodik folgend werden Rezeptionen Jonas diskursanalytisch kontextualisiert und entlang einheitlicher Analysekategorien vergleichend untersucht. Dabei fließen sowohl historisch-kritische Denkansätze des New Historicism, als auch eine hermeneutische Skepsis hinsichtlich der Re-Konstruktion von Geschichte sowie methodologische Grundlagen der Vergleichenden Literaturwissenschaft und Religionswissenschaft, insbesondere in Auseinandersetzung mit Intertextualitätstheorien, in die Arbeit ein. Das Ergebnis ist ein detailreicher Bildausschnitt eines innerjüdischen Rezeptionsdiskurses

    Abstract: To Christians the Iberian Peninsula was Hispania, to Muslims al-Andalus, and to Jews Sefarad. As much as these were all names given to the same real place, the names also constituted ideas, and like all ideas, they have histories of their own. To some, al-Andalus and Sefarad were the subjects of conventional expressions of attachment to and pride in homeland of the universal sort displayed in other Islamic lands and Jewish communities; but other Muslim and Jewish political, literary, and religious actors variously developed the notion that al-Andalus or Sefarad, its inhabitants, and their culture were exceptional and destined to play a central role in the history of their peoples.In Iberian Moorings Ross Brann traces how al-Andalus and Sefarad were invested with special political, cultural, and historical significance across the Middle Ages. This is the first work to analyze the tropes of Andalusi and Sefardi exceptionalism in comparative perspective. Brann focuses on the social power of these tropes in Andalusi Islamic and Sefardi Jewish cultures from the tenth through the twelfth century and reflects on their enduring influence and its expressions in scholarship, literature, and film down to the present day

    Abstract: This collection of essays investigates signs of toleration, recognition, respect and other positive forms of interaction between and within religious groups of late antiquity. At the same time, it acknowledges that examples of tolerance are significantly fewer in ancient sources than examples of intolerance and are often limited to insiders, while outsiders often met with contempt, or even outright violence. The essays take both perspectives seriously by analysing the complexity pertaining to these encounters. Religious concerns, ethnicity, gender and other social factors central to identity formation were often intertwined and they yielded different ways of drawing the limits of tolerance and intolerance. This book enhances our understanding of the formative centuries of Jewish and Christian religious traditions.     Abstract: In eleven contributions, Visual Antisemitism in Central Europe, Imagery of Hatred deals with visual manifestations of antisemitism in Central Europe from the Middle Ages to the present day. The publication, which presents heretofore largely unknown materials, seeks responses from diverse perspectives to the question of the role of visuality in the development of antisemitic moods and political agendas that encouraged hatred towards Jews. The scope of visual anti-Judaism and antisemitism always was and still is very wide: from stereotypical depictions that can conceal an underlying message through humorous content, to clearly formulated assaults that aim to escalate animosity towards an imaginary collective enemy. The goal in both these cases is the exclusion of Jews from the majority society imagined as a monolithic whole, and the reification of a dividing line between "us" and "them". With its wide thematic and methodological range, this book offers a comprehensive image of the phenomenon of visual anti-Judaism and antisemitism and provides rich comparative material for the entire Central European region

Diese Einführung erschließt das weite Feld postkolonialer Theoriebildung über eine kritische Debatte der Schriften der drei prominentesten postkolonialen Stimmen – Edward Said, Gayatri Spivak und Homi Bhabha. Die aktualisierte dritte Auflage unterzieht insbesondere die neuen Schriften Spivaks und Bhabhas einer kritischen Würdigung, setzt sich aber auch mit den gegenwärtigen Diskussionen um Globalisierung, Religion, Menschenrechte und Dekolonisierung auseinander.

    Abstract: The lost archive of the Fatimid caliphate (909-1171) survived in an unexpected place: the storage room, or geniza, of a synagogue in Cairo, recycled as scrap paper and deposited there by medieval Jews. Marina Rustow tells the story of this extraordinary find, inviting us to reconsider the longstanding but mistaken consensus that before 1500 the dynasties of the Islamic Middle East produced few documents, and preserved even fewer.Beginning with government documents before the Fatimids and paper's westward spread across Asia, Rustow reveals a millennial tradition of state record keeping whose very continuities suggest the strength of Middle Eastern institutions, not their weakness. Tracing the complex routes by which Arabic documents made their way from Fatimid palace officials to Jewish scribes, the book provides a rare window onto a robust culture of documentation and archiving not only comparable to that of medieval Europe, but, in many cases, surpassing it. Above all, Rustow argues that the problem of archives in the medieval Middle East lies not with the region's administrative culture, but with our failure to understand preindustrial documentary ecology.Illustrated with stunning examples from the Cairo Geniza, this compelling book advances our understanding of documents as physical artifacts, showing how the records of the Fatimid caliphate, once recovered, deciphered, and studied, can help change our thinking about the medieval Islamicate world and about premodern polities more broadly

    Abstract: This volume contributes to the growing interest in understanding the phenomenon of prayer and praying in the Hebrew Bible, Early Judaism, and nascent Christianity. Papers by the leading scholars in these fields revisit long-standing questions and chart new paths of inquiry into the nature, form, and practice of addressing the divine in the ancient world. The essays in this volume deal with particular texts of and about prayer, practices of prayer, as well as figures and locations (historical and literary) that are associated with prayer and praying. These studies apply a range of methods and theoretical approaches to prayer and the language of prayer in literatures of Early Judaism and Christianity. Some studies apply the classical methods of biblical studies to Second Temple texts of prayer, including form critical and text critical approaches; others engage in literary and narrative analysis of ancient works that recount discourse directed to the divine.     Abstract: ›Niedergang‹ oder ›Aufstieg‹ – zwischen diesen beiden Polen wurden bereits in der frühen ›Rassenhygiene‹ oder ›Eugenik‹ verschiedene Positionen eingenommen und Handlungsvorschläge unterbreitet, wie die sog. ›Entartung‹ der gesamten modernen ›Kulturmenschheit‹ aufgehalten bzw. deren sog. ›Höherzüchtung‹ vorangetrieben werden könnte. Die vorgeschlagenen Maßnahmen reichten dabei von reduzierter Hilfeleistung für sog. ›Schwache‹, über Heiratsförderungen oder -verbote und Zwangssterilisation bis hin zur staatlich gesteuerten Fortpflanzung der Menschen. Dies hatte zur Folge, dass sich zum Ende des 19. und am Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts auch in Deutschland eine erhebliche Bandbreite an ›rassenhygienischer‹ Literatur entwickelte, welche die Grundlage der vorliegenden Diskursanalyse bildet. “Decline“ or “rise” – between these two poles of the early “Rassenhygiene” or “Eugenik” different positions and recommendations were proposed for the prevention of the so-called “Entartung” of the modern “Kulturmenschheit” or the promotion of the so-called “Höherzüchtung”. The suggested agendas covered limited assistance for so-called “weak”, special facilitation or ban of marriage and forced sterilization to the point of state-controlled reproduction of human beings. As a consequence, by the end of the 19th and at the beginning of the 20th century an extensive variety of “rassenhygienischer” literature emerged in Germany forming the basis for the present discourse analysis.

Named after a military leader who became the successor to Moses, it depicts the march of the ancient Israelites into Canaan, describing how they subjugated and massacred the indigenous peoples. The Joshua Generation examines the book's centrality to the Israeli occupation today, revealing why nationalist longing and social reality are tragically out of sync in the Promised Land.Though the book of Joshua was largely ignored and reviled by diaspora Jews, the leaders of modern Israel have invoked it to promote national cohesion. Critics of occupation, meanwhile, have denounced it as a book that celebrates genocide.     Abstract: The photographs of the unknown Warsaw Ghetto little boy and the well-known Anne Frank became famous documents worldwide, representing the Holocaust. Many artists adopted them as a source of inspiration to express their feelings and ideas about Holocaust events in general and to deal with the fate of these two victims in particular. Moreover, the artists emphasized the uniqueness of both children, but at the same time used their image to convey social and political messages.By using images of these children, the artists both evoke our attention and sympathy and our anger against the Nazis’ crime of killing one and a half million Jewish children in the Holocaust.Because they represent different sexes, and different aspects - Western and Eastern Jewry - of Holocaust experience, artists used them in many contexts.This book will complete the lack of comprehensive research referring to the visual representations of these children in artworks

Contributions explore the formative role of the figure of the heretic and of heretic thought in the development of the Jewish traditions from antiquity to the 20th century.     Abstract: This book sheds new light on the history of the sanctity of Jerusalem in Islam. It is noticed already in the Quran which describes Muhammad's vision of a nocturnal journey from the "sacred mosque" (al-masjid al-ḥarām) in Mecca to the "far-off mosque" (al-masjid al-aqṣā) namely, the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. In his night journey to the site of the demolished Temple, Muhammad signaled to his contemporary Jews the course of salvation in which already Moses had led the Children of Israel to their promised land. On the other hand, the Quran praises also the Abrahamic sanctity of Mecca, especially in sūras which reflect the polemical rift with the Jews who eventually refused to recognize Muhammad as their messianic savior. After the death of Muhammad, when the first Muslims came from Arabia to Palestine, their awareness of the Quranic sanctity of al-Masjid al-Aqṣā resurfaced. This book elucidates major aspects of the renewed and growing sanctity of Jerusalem and al-Sham at large, as reflected in the available Islamic traditions. These traditions show also how patterns of the sanctity of Jerusalem were eventually adapted to Mecca in reaction to the growing prestige of Jerusalem, especially during the Umayyad period

    Abstract: The Jews’ Indian investigates the history of American Jewish relationships with Native Americans, both in the realm of cultural imagination and in face-to-face encounters. These two groups’ exchanges were numerous and diverse, proving at times harmonious when Jews’ and Natives people’s economic and social interests aligned, but discordant and fraught at other times. American Jews could be as exploitative of Native cultural, social, and political issues as other American settlers, and historian David Koffman argues that these interactions both unsettle and historicize the often triumphant consensus history of American Jewish life.     Abstract: ‘‘‘Who am I?’ and ‘Who are we?’ are the existential, foundational questions in our lives. In our modern world, there is no construct more influential than ‘identity’ – whether as individuals or as groups. The concept of group identity is the focal point of a research group named “A Question of Identity” at the Mandel Scholion Interdisciplinary Research Center in the Humanities at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. The papers collected in this volume represent the proceedings of a January 2017 conference organized by the research group which dealt with identity formation in six contextual settings: Ethno-religious identities in light of the archaeological record; Second Temple period textual records on Diaspora Judaism; Jews and Christians in Sasanian Persia; minorities in the Persian achaemenid period; Inter-ethnic dialogue in pre-1948 Palestine; and redefinitions of Christian Identity in the Early Modern period

    Abstract: Dieses Studienbuch stellt die "Geschichte Israels" von den Anfängen bis zum Bar-Kochba-Aufstand 132-135 n. Chr. dar. Das für Exegese und Theologiestudium unverzichtbare Wissen vermittelt der Autor verständlich und vor dem Hintergrund der aktuellen Forschung. Er zieht für seine Darstellung alle verfügbaren Quellen heran. Exemplarisch wird aufgezeigt, wie diese Quellen zu interpretieren sind und wo die Grenzen der Rekonstruktion von Geschichte liegen. Dazu führt er in den Stand der archäologischen und historischen Forschung ein und bezieht die Ergebnisse kritisch auf die biblische Darstellung. So entsteht ein Bild der Geschichte des antiken Israel im Kontext der südlichen Levante, das manches Mal vertraut, oft aber auch frisch und unerwartet daherkommt. Für die Neuauflage wurden zahlreiche Abschnitte überarbeitet und neueste Literatur ergänzt. Der Charakter als Studienbuch wurde noch einmal methodisch reflektiert und verstärkt.

    Abstract: Main description: Der Staatssekretär im Reichsministerium des Innern Wilhelm Stuckart (1902-1953) war einer der wichtigsten juristischen Interpreten und Legitimatoren des NS-Staates. Als Mit-Autor der Nürnberger Rassegesetze goss er dessen biologistische Grundlagen in Gesetze und begleitete später die Vorbereitungen zum Genozid. Im Frühjahr 1942 vertrat er auf der Endlösungskonferenz am Wannsee sein Ressort. Nach dem Krieg gehörte Stuckart zu den Schöpfern der Legende von der "sauberen Verwaltung", die sich den rassistischen Ansprüchen der NS-Machthaber widersetzt habe. Die biographische Auseinandersetzung mit Stuckart belegt nicht nur die prägende Funktion von führenden Juristen in der NS-Verwaltung, sie untersucht auch die Rolle der Innenverwaltung und ihre Mitwirkung am Genozid.

The authors convey a vivid picture of the prolific lecture activities of the Society, the members of which included a number of Jewish academics who were barred from success at the universities as a consequence of academic anti-Semitism

    Abstract: The study is concerned with research into 20th century Jewish autobiography written in German. After an overview illuminating the tradition of autobiographical writing in the 19th and 20th centuries, the study develops the specific conditions of Jewish autobiography, which has been in existence since the end of the 18th century. The main section of the work is given over to individual studies of autobiographical texts by Jakob Wassermann, Werner Kraft, Gershom Scholem, Max Fürst, Ernst Toller, Ludwig Greve, Ruth Klüger and Georges-Arthur Goldschmidt.

    Abstract: Main description: Die Wiedergutmachung gehört zu den zentralen Themen in der Auseinandersetzung der deutschen Nachkriegsgesellschaft mit dem "Dritten Reich". Ihre Leistungen und Mängel wirken bis heute nach. Tobias Winstel analysiert die administrative Praxis der Entschädigung und Rückerstattung, stellt Regelwerke, Institutionen und konkurrierende Ansprüche vor. Er macht die Erwartungen der ehemaligen Verfolgten und ihre Erfahrungen im Prozess der Wiedergutmachung sichtbar. Eingebunden werden Perspektiven der Politik-, Verwaltungs- und Rechtsgeschichte bis hin zur Wirkungs- und Erfahrungsgeschichte. Texts and works of art are discussed from all three monotheistic world religions.

    Abstract: Welche Entwicklung erfuhr der Antisemitismus in Spanien, als nach dem Vertreibungsedikt (1492) das Land nicht länger ein Ort der Koexistenz verschiedener ethnischer Gruppen war? Dies war das zentrale Thema eines Kolloquiums in Konstanz (Mai 2000), dessen Ergebnisse hier vorgestellt werden. An dem Kolloquium nahmen Anthropologen, Historiker und Literaturwissenschaftler teil. Diese interdisziplinäre Annäherung konzentrierte sich auf die Faktoren, Räume, Zahlen und Stimmen, die in den antijüdischen (und damit antisemitischen) Diskurs involviert waren, sowohl in ihrem historischen Kontext als auch in ihrer literarischen Darstellung. Bei dem letzten Thema ist dem apologetischen Aspekt ebensoviel Aufmerksamkeit gewidmet worden wie dem kritischen.
    Abstract: What development did anti-Semitism take in Spain when, after the Banishment Edict (1492), the country was no longer a locus of co-existence for different ethnic groups? This was the topic central to the colloquium in Konstanz (May 2000), the results of which are presented here. The colloquium united anthropologists, historians and literary scholars. This interdisciplinary approach focused on the factors, spaces, figures and voices involved in anti-Jewish (and hence anti-Semitic) discourse, both in their historical context and in their literary representation. On the latter issue, as much attention is given to the apologetic as to the critical aspect.

    Abstract: Anhand ausgewählter Stücke israelischer Autoren zeigt diese Studie, wie in der Konfrontation mit den kunstkritischen Traditionen des Judentums und durch die Thematisierung der Geschichte eine Dramatik des "israelischen Realismus" (Gershon Shaked) entstanden ist, die Spuren der Auseinandersetzung mit einer hemmenden religiösen Tradition bewahrt hat und das israelische Theater auch deshalb als "verspätetes Theater" zu erkennen gibt. Da in seinem Umfeld eine "dramatische" Wahrnehmung der Wirklichkeit vorherrscht, kommt in ihm die Geschichte als ein das Dramatische fördernder Impuls zur Geltung, der sich in der häufigen Selbstthematisierung des Theaters ausweist. Über das herkömmliche "Theater-im-Theater"-Motiv (Pirandellismus) hinausgehend, ist der Mythos (plot) des Dramas hier aber auch kritisch auf den äußeren "Mythos" bezogen, den zionistisch bestimmten Diskurs über die jüdische Geschichte, der in der Leidensgeschichte der Diaspora beginnt, bis zur Gründung des Staates Israel und zum Triumph der zionistischen Bewegung reicht und sich als eine Art säkularisierte Fortschreibung des traditionellen Mythos von "Exil und Erlösung" verstehen läßt. Anhand dreier Themen unterschiedlicher Autoren (der israelische Unabhängigkeitskrieg, die Rolle der Frau im Zionismus, der Holocaust) und im Werk Joshua Sobols (* 1939) wird gezeigt, wie auf der Bühne geschichtliche Erfahrungen sichtbar werden, die die Eindimensionalität des zionistischen Mythos sprengen und zu seiner "Dekonstruktion" beitragen
    Abstract: This study discusses the emergence of 'Israeli realism' in the theatre in terms of the confrontation with Judaic traditions of art criticism and the thematization of history. In line with the 'dramatic' perception of reality prevalent in Israeli theatre, history is viewed as an impulse that furthers an engagement with the phenomenon of drama and the theatre. With reference to three major themes (war of independence, role of women, Holocaust) and the work of Joshua Sobol (*1939), the author shows how the treatment of history on the stage contributes to a 'deconstruction' of the Zionist myth
