    Abstract: In Traditional Society in Transition: The Yemeni Jewish Experience Bat-Zion Eraqi Klorman offers an account of the unique circumstances of Yemeni Jewish existence in the wake of major changes since the second half of the nineteenth century. It follows this community's transition from a traditional patriarchal society to a group adjusting to the challenges of a modern society. Unlike the perception of the Yemeni Jews as receptive to modernity only following immigration to Palestine and Israel, Eraqi Klorman convincingly shows that some modern ideas played a role in their lives while in Yemen. Once in Palestine, they appear here as adjusting to the new conditions by striving to participate in the Zionist enterprise, consenting to secular education, transforming family practices and the status of women. “The book is an important contribution to the study of Yemeni Jews in Yemen and abroad as well as for Jewish-Muslim relations, relations between Yemeni Jews and other Jews, and gender studies...Many of these issues have not been previously studied, and the use of private archives and interviews greatly increases the value of this study.\' -Rachel Simon, Princeton University.     Abstract: This timely and important work takes a critical look at the shifting roles of police, who are becoming increasingly tasked with handling terrorism threats on top of their regular responsibilities. With an unprecedented empirical study of the Israel National Police, the authors of this book examine whether this increased focus on security-related threats may come at the expense of addressing “classic” police responsibilities, such as fighting crime and dealing with local, day-to-day community problems. They also examine whether this shift has had a detrimental effect on police-community relationships and perceptions of police legitimacy, as their role changes from “service” to “suspicion.” Through a four-year, multi-method study , the authors of this work have examined the effects of this shifting role on a number of key areas of policing, including police effectiveness at fighting crime and police legitimacy, drawing conclusions applicable to any democratic police force. The results of the study provide a number of concrete recommendations for maintaining effectiveness and community relationships of the police, with increasing responsibilities, challenges, and limited resources. This work will be of interest for researchers in criminology and criminal justice, particularly with a focus on police studies and counter-terrorism; police administrators; and researchers in related disciplines, such as sociology and public administration

    Abstract: The attitude of Jews living in the medieval Christian world to Jews who converted to Christianity or to Christians seeking to join the Jewish faith reflects the central traits that make up Jewish self-identification. The Jews saw themselves as a unique group chosen by God, who expected them to play a specific and unique role in the world. This study researches fully for the first time the various aspects of the way European Jews regarded members of their own fold in the context of lapses into another religion. It attempts to understand whether they regarded the issue of conversion with self-confidence or with suspicion, and whether their attitude was based on a clear theological position, or on issues of socialisation. The book will primarily interest students and lecturers of Jewish/Christian relations, the Middle Ages, Jews in the Medieval period, and inter-religious research.

    Abstract: This monograph is the product of Stern's two decades of excavation at Tel Dor on the Carmel Coast, a city that Egyptian sources indicate was ruled in the eleventh century BCE by a Sikil king. Near the end of the period during which he directed excavations there, Stern began to notice the unique material culture of the Northern Sea Peoples and connected this material with discoveries in adjacent regions and in the north of Israel. A related survey of the ‘Akko Valley conducted by Avner Raban resulted in a further accumulation of data that supported the conclusion that the Sea Peoples that Egyptian sources indicated had settled in this region had in fact left behind evidence of their presence. This realization preceded the appearance of additional information—both material culture and inscriptions—that reflected the presence of Northern Sea Peoples throughout portions of northern Syria and southern Anatolia. Two main principles guide Stern's study. (1) Historical sources provide the best evidence for contemporary events—in this case, specifically, the evidence concerns the Sikils and Sherden, as well as biblical sources that refer to Northern Sea Peoples as "Philistines" and that recount their wars with Israel in the north of the land, in the Jezreel Valley, and in Gilboa. (2) Ethnic archaeology is a genuine concept: every people that settles in any area naturally leaves marks of its own culture. The conclusion that is traced here, then, is that the culture of the Northern Sea Peoples, though difficult to identify, nonetheless did leave clear evidence that becomes apparent when the relevant strata at sites along the coast from the Yarkon and farther north and in the 'Akko and Jezreel Valleys are examined. In this volume Stern presents the most complete picture that can be drawn from the evidence uncovered in the past few decades. Lavish illustrations accompany the discussion

    Abstract: The Society of Jesus (Jesuits) has become a leader in the dialogue between Jews and Catholics as was manifested in the role that the Jesuit Cardinal Augustin Bea played in the adoption by the Second Vatican Council of Nostra Aetate, the charter for that new relationship. Still the encounters between Jesuits and Jews were often characterized by animosity and this historical record made them a tragic couple, related but estranged. This volume is the first examination of the complex interactions between Jesuits and Jews from the early modern period in Europe and Asia through the twentieth century where special attention is focused on the historical context of the Holocaust

    Abstract: In Reading the Rabbis Eva De Visscher examines the Hebrew scholarship of Englishman Herbert of Bosham (c.1120-c.1194). Chiefly known as the loyal secretary and hagiographer of Archbishop Thomas Becket and enemy of Henry II, he appears here as an outstanding Hebraist whose linguistic proficiency and engagement with Rabbinic sources, including contemporary teachers, were unique for a northern-European Christian of his time. Two commentaries on the Psalms by Herbert form the focus of scrutiny. In demonstrating influence from Jewish and Christian texts such as Rashi, Hebrew-French glossaries, Hebrew-Latin Psalters, and Victorine scholarship, De Visscher situates Herbert within the context of an increased interest in the revision of Jerome's Latin Bible and literal exegesis, and a heightened Christian awareness of Jewish 'other-ness'

    Abstract: Does the design of the Tabernacle in the wilderness correspond to God’s blueprint of Creation? The Christian Topography, a sixth-century Byzantine Christian work, presents such a cosmology. Its theory is based on the “pattern” revealed to Moses on Mount Sinai when he was told to build the Tabernacle and its implements “after their pattern, which is being shown thee on the Mount.” (Exod. 25: 40). The book demonstrates, through texts and images, the motifs that link the Tabernacle and Creation. It traces the long chain of transmission that connects the Jewish and Christian traditions from Syria and ancient Israel to France and Spain from the first through the fourteenth century, revealing new models of interaction between Judaism and Christianity

Alina Gromova hat 15 junge Erwachsene ein Jahr lang durch ihren Alltag begleitet und ist ihnen an Orte wie jüdische Treffs und Partys, Cafés und Wohnungen, Synagogen und Clubs gefolgt. Die Analyse von Begegnungen zwischen jüdischen, russischen, deutschen, israelischen und muslimischen Traditionen offenbart einen ungezwungenen Umgang mit jüdischer Religion und Symbolik, jüdischer Essenstradition und Mode.Diese ethnologische Studie zeigt: Es ist ein Umgang »koscher light«, in dem sich Religion und Tradition nach den Gesetzen der Urbanität richten.
    Abstract: What role do spatial aspects play for the identity work and community education of young Russian-speaking Jews who now live in Germany? Alina Gromova has accompanied 15 young adults for a year through their daily lives and followed them to places like Jewish dates and parties, cafés and homes, synagogues and clubs. Her analysis of encounters between Jewish, Russian, German, Israeli, and Muslim traditions reveals a casual handling of Jewish religion, symbolism, food tradition, and fashion. This ethnographic study exhibits the dealings of Generation »Kosher Light«, in which religion and tradition conform to the laws of urbanity.

    Abstract: Israel und Palästina - Was sich heute als politisch scheinbar ausweglose Situation präsentiert, entsprang einst dem optimistischen, wenn auch naiven Traum, mit der Gründung des Staates Israel 1948 eine friedliche Gesellschaft für alle Religionen zu errichten.     Abstract: Why is education in the open society not open? Why is this option not even considered in the debate over which education is most suited for the open society? Many consider such an option irresponsible. What, then, are the minimal responsibilities of education? The present volume raises these questions and many more. It is a book we have been waiting for. It offers a rare combination of two seemingly opposite, unyielding attitudes: critical and friendly. Dr. Yehezkely applies a rigorous fallibilist-critical approach to issues regarding contemporary education. His diagnosis is that the source of our trouble is the closed undemocratic character of education, which causes education to become, in effect, a fifth column in the open democratic society. Following Popper, he concedes that democracy is every bit as flawed and as problematic as its enemies accuse it of being, particularly in education; still it is our only hope, since open responsible debate of vital problems cannot do without it. Democracy is risky: yet its absence guarantees failure, especially in closed undemocratic education, even when inspired by the most progressive ideas extant, charged with tremendous good will, and executed with selfless love and devotion.     Abstract: The present volume of studies on the life and work of Moritz (Moshe) Steinschneider (1816-1907) seeks to modify the traditional view of Steinschneider as a “mere bibliographer” by revealing other dimensions of his scientific personality. Together, the articles show that Steinschneider’s manifold scholarly activities were rooted in a well-defined scientific agenda, which modern readers do not easily recognize but which deserves to be recovered. This volume represents a first attempt to sketch Steinschneider’s intellectual biography and highlights the continued significance of his work for Jewish studies. It is an important contribution to our understanding of the project of nineteenth-century Wissenschaft des Judentums and its lasting impact on contemporary scholarly practice

    Abstract: This book addresses different theories related to the origin of Gnosticism. The author comes to the conclusion that, if we set aside the Christian substance, in Gnostic literature – besides Platonist philosophy – the most numerous influences come from Judaism. As they have, partially, reached Gnostic literature independent from Christianity, it could validate the theory according to which we should be searching for the origin of Gnosticism in certain Judaist circles. The author analyses the use of lore from the Old Testament and Judaism in Gnostic literature. Even though this does not prove that Gnosticism has evolved from Judaism, it still shows how extensively the Judaist world of thought influenced Gnosticism and how it gives us a reason to ask whether we should consider more thoroughly the theory according to which we should be searching for the founders of Gnostic lore within certain Judaist circles of antiquity. Über den Ursprung der antiken Gnosis gibt es verschiedene Theorien, aber noch heute herrscht in dieser Frage in der Forschung kein Konsens. Der Autor dieses Buches betrachtet unterschiedliche Ursprungstheorien der Gnosis und kommt zu dem Ergebnis, dass (abgesehen vom christlichen Stoff) neben den Einflüssen des Mittelplatonismus der alttestamentliche und jüdische Stoff in der gnostischen Literatur die wichtigste Rolle spielt. Da der jüdische Stoff teilweise durch die Vermittlung des Christentums in die Gnosis gekommen ist, könnte das die alte Hypothese unterstützen, dass die Gnosis innerhalb des Christentums entstanden sei. Doch gibt es eine Vielzahl gnostischer Texte, die vom Christentum nicht beeinflusst sind, in denen aber der alttestamentliche und jüdische Stoff eine sehr wichtige Rolle spielt. Diese Tatsache könnte nun die zweite alte Theorie unterstützen, nach der die Wurzeln der Gnosis im antiken Judentum liegen. Der Autor der vorliegenden Arbeit analysiert den Gebrauch der alttestamentlichen und jüdischen Überlieferungen und Motive in der gnostischen Literatur und kommt zu dem Ergebnis, dass es nicht letztgültig bewiesen ist, dass die Gnosis aus dem Judentum heraus entstand. Doch zeigt die Untersuchung, wie große Bedeutung die alttestamentlichen und jüdischen Motive in der Gnosis gehabt haben. Dies gibt Anlass zu fragen, ob wir dennoch die Theorie ernsthaft zu erwägen haben, nach der der Ursprung der Gnosis in Kreisen des antiken Judentums zu suchen sei

    Abstract: In Between Feminism and Orthodox Judaism , Yael Israel-Cohen offers an analysis of the activism and identity of women considered at the forefront of the feminist challenge to Orthodoxy.     Abstract: This work studies and compares systematically the text of Tertullian, an African Church Father of the third century CE, on idolatry with the rabbinic Mishnah Avodah Zarah , on the same subject, dating roughly from the same period. Similarities and differences between the Jewish and Christian approaches to idolatry are examined and accounted for. The research is inscribed in the wider framework of discussions on the “parting of the ways” between Jews and Christians.     Abstract: Die verbreitete Beurteilung der Hamas als radikale und dogmatische Terrororganisation steht bisher einer Einbeziehung in den nahöstlichen Friedensprozess im Weg – ungeachtet nationaler Wahlerfolge. Inwieweit die Hamas aber auch zu pragmatischem Anpassungsverhalten fähig ist, wird in dieser transnationalen Vergleichsstudie der Hamas detailliert untersucht.Mit seiner Analyse von Aktivitätsspektrum, Umfeldeinbindung und Organisation der Hamas nicht nur in den besetzten palästinensischen Gebieten, sondern auch in Jordanien, im Libanon und in Syrien betritt der Autor Neuland. So wird ein ganzheitliches Bild der Hamas gezeichnet, das für Prognosen über ihr zukünftiges Verhalten von großem Wert ist bzw. sein kann.

    Abstract: La naissance du sionisme dans l’Europe de la fin du 19e siècle peut être ramenée à la croissance de l’antisémitisme. Notamment des évènements comme l’affaire Dreyfus ont contribué à créer une organisation pour mettre en oeuvre la fondation d’un État juif en Palestine. Or, les réflexions politiques et juridiques entreprises par Theodor Herzl renouent à la fois avec les concepts fondateurs de la Troisième République et avec les idées du socialisme utopique. Le projet sioniste, qui avait bien connu des prédécesseurs à l’aube des temps modernes, a déclenché un débat parmi les intellectuels juifs et non juifs en Europe, un débat qui est encore loin d’être clos. Les textes réunis dans le présent recueil traitent – tout en mettant l’accent sur le 19e et 20e siècles – ce rêve d’un retour en Terre promise se faisant réalité. Le 60e anniversaire de la fondation de l’Etat d’Israël en 2008 ainsi que le centenaire de la ville de Tel Aviv célébré en 2009 devraient donner lieu à une réévaluation des rapports de la littérature francophone avec Israël.

    Abstract: In der unmittelbaren Nachkriegszeit lebten in Bayerisch-Schwaben fast zehntausend jüdische Displaced Persons (DPs). Sie warteten auf eine Möglichkeit zur Auswanderung nach Palästina oder Übersee. Neben den großen DP-Camps in Leipheim, Neu-Ulm und Lechfeld bestanden sogenannte Communities in mehr als einem Dutzend Städte und Gemeinden. Hier entwickelte sich die fast vollständig vernichtete jüdische Kultur Osteuropas zu einer neuen Blüte. Die Überlebenden der Shoa gründeten religiöse Hochschulen, gaben eine jiddischsprachige Zeitung heraus und gründeten eigene Fußballvereine. Dieses Kapitel der bayerisch-schwäbischen Geschichte ist nahezu unbekannt. Aufgrund intensiver Forschung in US-amerikanischen, israelischen und deutschen Archiven gelang es den Autoren, das Leben der jüdischen DPs in den Wartesälen nachzuzeichnen.

    Abstract: Dialogue participants demonstrate strong motivations for contributing to interreligious dialogue, based on a firm belief that encountering the other generates understanding – the contact thesis. Interreligious dialogue meets with both suspicion and cynicism: the former because it may result in loss of identity, and the latter because important issues may be ignored. The hitherto unanswered question is how Jewish-Christian-Muslim dialogue affects the identities of its participants. In this study Rachel Reedijk analyses identity construction in an interreligious context against the backdrop of the dominant either/or discourse regarding religious diversity – and, for that matter, multiculturalism – in Western society. The conceptual framework of this study is constituted by the debate on essentialism and constructivism in the social sciences. She argues that, under the right circumstances, interreligious dialogue can move beyond polemics and apologetics and prepare the ground for understanding in the dual sense of prejudice reduction and interreligious hermeneutics

    Abstract: Jewish history has been extensively studied from social, political, religious, and intellectual perspectives, but the history of Jewish consumption and leisure has largely been ignored. The hitherto neglect of scholarship on Jewish consumer culture arises from the tendency within Jewish studies to chronicle the production of high culture and entrepreneurship. Yet consumerism played a central role in Jewish life. This volume is the first of its kind to deal with the topic of Jewish consumer culture. It gives new insights on Jewish belongings and longings and provides multiple readings of Jewish consumer culture as a vehicle of integration and identity in modern times. \'Overall Reuveni and Roemer offer a rich volume that will provoke thought and discussion in a variety of venues.     Abstract: Wasser ist rar im Nahen Osten. Die knappe Ressource wird immer häufiger zum Gegenstand politischer Konflikte in der ohnehin instabilen Region. Der Konflikt zwischen Israel und Palästina gilt als eines der gravierendsten Beispiele für diese Entwicklung: Wasser als umkämpftes Menschenrecht, Wasser als strategisches Mittel der Besetzungspolitik und Wasser als Gegenstand langwieriger Verhandlungen. Der Wasserkonflikt ist so alt wie der Nahostkonflikt selbst. Sogar mit Beginn des Oslo-Prozesses 1993 hat es weder einen grundlegenden Wandel im Wasserkonflikt, noch in der Aussicht auf Veränderung der Wasserknappheit gegeben. Immerhin können die Palästinenser in der momentanen Situation ihre eigene Wasserversorgung dort selbst verwalten, wo es ihnen laut der Übereinkünfte erlaubt ist. Jedoch ist diese Freiheit eine sehr begrenzte und eine endgültige Klärung dieses Streitpunktes wurde, zusammen mit Jerusalem, den Flüchtlingen, den Siedlungen und der Staatsbildung auf die Endstatusverhandlungen verschoben. Chadi Bahouth, Absolvent des Otto-Suhr-Instituts der Freien Universität Berlin, untersucht in seiner Doktorarbeit die Gründe für die ungelöste Wasserfrage. Er analysiert die historische und rechtliche Chronologie des Konfliktes, bietet Lösungsvorschläge für die Wasserkrise an und erklärt, warum die Region dennoch für Generationen nicht zur Ruhe kommen wird.

    Abstract: This book is an in-depth study of the function of music in religious experience according to Rabbi Naḥman of Bratzlav. It provides new insights on his unique doctrine of the “Good Points”, which represent the core of loving kindness and holiness in the human soul, and the musical context in which they become both a means and a metaphor for spiritual transformation. Drawing on midrashic and kabbalistic sources, the book explores Naḥman’s perception of different types of “tzadiqim” (religious leaders), including himself, and the special role music plays in their leadership. It highlights the importance of creativity and renewal in the messianic process that involves both music and loving kindness

    Abstract: This 2009 review of Israeli labour market and social policy finds that Israel has enjoyed strong economic growth over the last decade, but the benefits of this are being distributed unevenly. Poverty rates are higher than in any OECD country, which reflects the deep social and economic divides in Israeli society. On one side, there is the general Jewish population with poverty and employment rates similar to those of OECD countries. On the other, there are Arabs and ultra-Orthodox Jews, or Haredim, who have large families, poor educational outcomes and low employment rates. As a result, just over half of Arab and Haredi families live in poverty. Almost half of all children entering primary school in Israel come from one of these two groups, so profound policy changes are needed to prevent future generations of Arabs and Haredim from being scarred by the disadvantages these population groups face today. Tackling the root causes of such deep inequality would greatly enhance the dynamism of the Israeli economy. Greater investment to help workers improve their skills is urgently needed. Welfare-to-work programmes need to be restructured and extended, including by reducing child benefits paid to families who are able to work but do not and by sharply increasing the Earned Income Tax Credit to tackle in-work poverty more effectively. And access to means-tested income supports for the neediest should be improved. Israel has failed to enforce many aspects of its labour legislation, contributing to poor employment conditions for many resident, cross-border and foreign low-income workers. Rules to overcome discrimination against all workers need to be enforced, and the illegal hiring and employment of temporary foreign workers need to be stamped out. Progress has been made in many of these areas. New legislation and initiatives have been introduced. The challenge is how to make reform work in practice. The consequences of not doing so would be devastating.

    Abstract: Der Weltpolitiker Shimon Peres gehört zu den außergewöhnlichsten und kontroversesten Figuren des Zeitgeschehens: Der »ewige Politiker« prägte das zionistische Projekt sowie die israelische Politik und Geschichte seit den 1950er Jahren bis heute wie kein anderer. Ebenso souverän wie scharfsinnig schildert und deutet die Autorin ein scheinbar widersprüchliches Leben: Der Friedensnobelpreisträger ist zugleich Vater der israelischen Atomstreitmacht; der Zivilpolitiker prägte das militarisierte Israel; der »Mann des Friedens« steht für Israels Tragik der Friedensunfähigkeit. Peres’ politischer Werdegang erzählt die Geschichte der Durchsetzung des Zionismus und gleichzeitig seines Scheiterns; er verkörpert das politische Ringen um Sicherheit und Legitimität, verrät aber ein Israel, das eine politische Lösung mit den Palästinensern längst aufgegeben hat. Auf der Grundlage auch kaum bekannter Quellen wirft diese intellektuelle Biographie ein neues Licht auf die politische Kultur Israels und auf einen der schwierigsten Konflikte des 20. und 21. Jahrhunderts.

    Abstract: Israel’s agriculture is unique amongst developed countries in that land and water resources are nearly all state-owned and that agricultural production is dominated by co-operative communities. Israel is a world leader in agricultural technology, particularly in farming in arid conditions. This Review measures support provided to Israeli agriculture and evaluates the effectiveness of current agricultural policy measures. Israel has made progress in removing policies that distort trade, and resource allocation and support to agriculture is lower than the OECD average. However, the government still plays an important role. The report suggests further agricultural policy reforms to reduce costs for consumers and taxpayers and to improve the efficiency of current policy measures. A special focus of the report is the environmental performance of Israeli agriculture. This is already an issue with scarce land and water resources, accentuated by the overarching issue of climate change. The Review examines agriculture’s performance with respect to water resources and pollution, soils, biodiversity, air emissions and climate change. It concludes that strengthening policy coherence, especially in improving the management of water resources in agriculture, is important.

    Abstract: Auf der Suche nach dem Jerusalem Litauens - Begegnungen in New York, Tel Aviv und Vilnius. In der allgemeinen Wahrnehmung endet die Geschichte der osteuropäischen Juden mit dem Holocaust. Die vorliegende Studie stellt hingegen ihre facettenreiche Nachkriegsgeschichte in den Mittelpunkt. Sie folgt den Vilner Überlebenden auf dem Weg aus dem sowjetischen Vilnius über die Transit-Stationen in Polen und den DP-Lagern bis in die Aufnahmeländer - und kehrt schließlich zurück in die litauische Hauptstadt, wo erst 1991 wieder eine jüdische Gemeinde gegründet wurde. Indem sie osteuropäisch-jüdische Geschichte, Migrationsforschung, Erinnerungstheorie und empirische Kulturwissenschaft verbindet, bringt sie uns eine vielschichtige Lebenswelt jenseits des Shtetl-Klischees nahe und entwirft ein differenziertes Bild jüdischer Kultur-, Erinnerungs- und Trauerarbeit
