Abstract:
Traces the philosophy of Ernest Renan (1823-1892), the French philologist and historian of religion, as seen in his writings and lectures. In some of his works (e.g. "Histoire generale des langues semitiques"), Renan tried to prove the superiority of the Indo-European nations over the Semitic ones by linguistic analysis. Discusses the ties between those works and the racial antisemitism which was developing in late 19th-century France. However, in other works, Renan underlined the importance of the Jewish contribution to the idea of justice; these works had an influence on socialism.
