Abstract:
Describes the background and the events of the violent pogrom in Iaşi in which ca. 10,000 Jews were murdered. The pogrom was carried out by units of the Romanian army, the German army, the gendarmerie, the local police, and legionnaires. Following the rampage in the town, where Jews were murdered in their homes, in the streets, and at police headquarters, that evening several thousand Jews were loaded onto two trains, 80-120 persons in each car, and sent on a route from town to town without air, food, or water. Between 2,800-3,000 persons died in these death trains. The number killed in the town is not clear - accounts vary from 500 to several thousands. In the trial held in 1948 against 57 perpetrators, and which placed the blame for the pogrom on the Romanian government, the court put the number of murdered at ca. 10,000.
