Antisemitism History To 1500
Abstract:
Describes a potential blood libel case, when the body of a dead baby was found by Jews in the Call (Jewish Quarter) of Barcelona in 1301. The community immediately called in the royal authorities and after investigation the case was closed. However, the witnesses' testimonies reflect the suspicions and prejudice prevalent among medieval Jews and Christians. Concludes that by 1300, extreme popular antisemitism was as common in Spain as in northern Europe despite arguments to the contrary. Includes the Latin text of the protocol of the investigation.
