Abstract:
A lecture presented at the conference "National Identity, Assimilation and Antisemitism in England and in France in the 19th and 20th Centuries", Haifa University, May 1997. Analyzes the image of the assimilated French Jewish intellectual striving to integrate in post-emancipation France, including his reaction to antisemitism, as represented by Justine Weil, the main protagonist in Georges Duhamel's cyclical novel of ten volumes, "La chronique des Pasquier", published between 1933-45. States that Duhamel advocates symbiosis with the integrating society, instead of assimilation, because it preserves the uniqueness and origins of both sides - of the absorbing society and of the Jews striving to integrate.
