Kurzfassung:
Presents the original Greek text and a French translation of the work attributed to Gregory of Nyssa but actually written by Gregory, archbishop of Syracuse (called Gregory Asbestas, or, as he is often called today, Pseudo-Gregory), "Treaty on the Baptism of Jews", written in the second half of the 9th century in the Byzantine Empire. Gregory argued that the Jews should not be baptized without necessary precautions, or in conflict with Christian canon. He opposed Emperor Basil I's coercive pressure on the Jews to be baptized, while at the same time he regarded the Jews as incorrigible enemies of Christianity. He felt that the materialistic Jews should not be bribed in order to convert. Even if they are sincere in wishing to convert, they must forswear not only official Jewish beliefs but also secret practices. Christian laymen are forbidden to interfere in matters regarding baptism, and priests must seek the authorization of bishops. The "Commentaire" (pp. 340-357) traces the life of Gregory Asbestas, born ca. 800 in Syracuse, and the history of the baptism of Jews under Basil I.
Anmerkung:
