Abstract:
Studies the role of Jewish education in the French Jewish scout movement EIF from its establishment in 1923 until after the Holocaust. Motivated by patriotism at first, the EIF moved towards greater pluralism in the early 1930s, encompassing Zionism. With Léo Cohn joining the organization in 1933, neo-hasidic tendencies became dominant. Describes activities of the EIF during the German occupation, particularly their rural building site in Lautrec, headed by Robert Gamzon, EIF's founder. As of the summer of 1942, the main question became whether to assert one's Jewish identity or hide it. Cohn, who put moral survival before physical, died during his deportation in May 1944. After the war Gamzon emigrated to Israel, and the scout movement fell into a lethargy which lasted until the 1960s.
