Abstract:
Traces the history of the Comité Algérien d'Études Sociales, founded in 1915 in Algiers by Jewish intellectuals and leaders after a series of antisemitic incidents affecting Algerian Jews serving in the French army. It was not until 1919 that the CAES, headed by Dr. Henri Aboulker, achieved some results in its fight against antisemitism exercised by the colonial administration in Algeria. Presents Aboulker's thoughts on the causes of Algerian antisemitism and strategies for overcoming it. He held the government responsible for legal discrimination against Jews, who were not allowed to buy state-owned land and whose vote in financial, consular, and municipal matters was limited. Despite intense efforts between 1919-21, Aboulker and the CAES did not succeed in bringing about a revision of the legislation. In 1922 the CAES basically discontinued its activities, and resurfaced, somewhat changed, as the Comité Juif Algérien d'Études Sociales (CJAES) in 1936.
