Abstract:
A new phenomenon in post-communist Poland is the emergence of a Judaizing rhetoric, which involves Judaizing objects of hate - e.g. stigmatizing political opponents as Jews, or as persons of Jewish descent, even if this is not true. According to the political perspective shared by denouncers of imaginary Jews, the legitimacy of power is contingent upon ethnic and religious purity. Shows that origin and ethnicity became political issues in Poland long before the communist era. Nationalists regarded the assimilation of Jews into Polish society as a threat to the incipient national identity. The search for "hidden Jews" took place both in the early 20th century and in the 1950s-60s. Despite this rhetoric, antisemitism in present-day Poland is waning.
