Abstract:
Describes the case of J.J. Sylvester, a brilliant British-Jewish mathematician appointed as professor at the University of Virginia in 1842. The appointment of a Jew was opposed in the local Protestant press. A few months later, Sylvester was forced to resign following his physical attack against one of his students, possibly provoked by antisemitism. In 1843 he returned to England, where he engaged in research and teaching. In later years, when he returned to the U.S. as the first professor of mathematics at Johns Hopkins University (1877-1883), he spoke out against antisemitism in American universities.
