Abstract:
The pogrom in Przytyk on 9 March 1936 was a result of the anti-Jewish boycott proclaimed by the Endecja (the National Democratic Party) which tacitly supported radical gangs who promised to hand over Jewish businesses to unemployed Polish youth. During an assault by the gangs on Jewish shops in Przytyk, the Jewish self-defense unit killed a Pole. In the ensuing pogrom, a Jewish couple were killed, many beaten, and homes and shops destroyed. The pogrom was followed by a national Jewish protest and strike. At the trial of those involved, Jews received prison sentences while many Poles were acquitted for "lack of evidence".
