Abstract:
Discusses hostility against Jews in the Brandenburg area during the 16th century. Focuses on the competition concerning the monopoly on salt production, including anti-Jewish agitation by two Austrian competitors, the brothers Johann and Georg Drachenfuss, who incited the elector Joachim II to expel the Jews, offering him 10,000 talers for this purpose. However, Joachim II found ways to protect the Jews, and granted them the same legal rights as the Christians. Yet, the anti-Jewish ambiance led to agitations in Frankfurt/Oder and Berlin in 1558. The expulsion of Jews from Brandenburg occurred in 1573, and was connected with the execution of the Jew Lippold, a mint-master who was accused of the murder of his benefactor Joachim II and of betrayal. Many Jews fled to Prague and Poland.
