Abstract:
The article discusses a text in Yiddish of the order of conduct of the AmsterdamAshkenazi synagogue. The text teaches us about the inner world of the Ashkenazicommunity in northwest Europe, and on the demeanor of this central institution, which served not only as a place of prayer but also as the daily gathering place ofthe community. The conducts focus on status in the community, as well as dailyconduct and organization. The text was written and printed by the order of the officers of the community, and was inspired by their will to support communalauthority and its role in the organization of the religious life in the synagogue. Thetext is eight pages long, in Yiddish, and can be seen as a part of the ritualization ofJewish life, as well as the civilizing process in early modern Jewish culture.
