Nazi concentration camps
Abstract:
Chronicles Nazi attemps to liquidate the main concentration camps before their liberation by the Allied armies. Himmler gave orders to destroy all evidence of the camps: to evacuate or shoot the prisoners, level the gas chambers, and burn documents. Because of the panicky flight of the SS, and also because of the resistance of the prisoners in Buchenwald, Dachau, and Ebensee, these orders were not carried out completely. Also, some prisoners were freed previously, after negotiations with the Red Cross and Bernadotte of Sweden; Bergen-Belsen was surrendered to the British as the result of negotiations with Himmler; Mauthausen was saved when a Red Cross agent joined forces with the camp's resistance organization. But thousands were shot, and thousands of others died on death marches. Notes that the SS attempted to rule by setting prisoners of different nationalities against each other, especially Germans against East Europeans and Jews; it succeeded wherever there was no strong resistance.
