Abstract:
Analyzes the Catholic position towards the Jews in Italy during the 1930s as reflected in articles published by the pro-Catholic and pro-fascist newspaper "L'Italia, " published in Milano. The articles include expressions of anti-Jewish prejudices and stereotypes, reflecting the evolution of Italian policy towards the Jews during this period. Italian Catholics denounced the extremes of Nazi racism, but they condoned a low level of cultural racism and antisemitism, suggesting that the Jews should not be persecuted but neither should they be granted all constitutional rights unless they converted to Christianity.
