Abstract:
Discusses responses to the Holocaust in the visual arts, such as paintings and sculptures by camp inmates, survivors, and various nonparticipants in the Holocaust, including children of survivors. Works by inmates and survivors which depict everyday life in the Holocaust were created mostly in a realistic style, as documentation and testimony and as a way to affirm life by resisting the dehumanization imposed by the perpetrators. Common motifs, such as the depiction of people behind barbed wire or mounds of corpses, remain potent images of the Holocaust to this day. However, these symbols have been used in various contexts related to current issues, such as the war in Korea or the dispute over Palestine; such an approach may disregard the uniqueness of the Holocaust and even turn into denial of the Holocaust as may be observed in some of the interpreted works.
