Abstract:
Describes the Church's campaign for conversion of the Jews as the background to the disputation, in which the Ramban was forced to defend Judaism, standing alone against the convert Pablo Christiani and a whole battery of clerics. Summarizes the Christian arguments and the Ramban's answers, as recorded in his "Sefer ha-Vikuah"; occasionally also cites the Christian version of the disputation for comparison, but considers the Ramban's more reliable. Emphasizes the unfair procedure, in which the Ramban was not allowed to speak freely but only to respond to the arguments of his opponents. According to the Ramban, the king ended the disputation without declaring a victory for either side; a defeat for the Ramban would have meant increased pressure on the Jews to convert, but a victory would have been dangerous to them as well.
