Abstract:
Elijah Revelation in the Emergence of Medieval Kabbalah: FromManuscripts to Printed EditionsUnlike earlier tradition according to which the Kabbalah was given on Mount Sinaias part of the Torah, another tradition arose towards the end of the thirteenthcentury that argued that the historical origins of the Kabbalah are to be attributedto "Elijah's revelations" to the earliest kabbalists in Provence ‒ R. Abraham b.David of Posquières and his son R. Isaac Sagi Nahor. However surprising thisuntraditional tradition may be, it was prevalent amongst many of the importantkabbalists of this period onwards. This article tries to explore first and foremost thehistorical background for the development of this tradition. Then it will focus onits fullest, earliest, and most prevalent version, and trace its history from the earliestmanuscript to printed editions of kabbalistic works, until eventually it was adoptedin the sixteenth century by R. Hayyim Vital in his introduction to his Etz Hayyimin validation of the claim that R. Isaac Luria's doctrines came to him via a "revelation of Elijah". The significant changes between the variants of this traditionthroughout the generations turn out to be very important for understanding thestruggle within Kabbalistic circles for authority on the one hand and for creativityon the other hand
