Abstract: In the Babylonian Talmud tractate Sanhedrin, one finds a tale about a creation ofan artificial calf by two sages who dealt with Hilkhot Yeṣirah, the Laws ofFormation. Already in the 11th century CE the words 'Laws of Formation' wereconnected to the short, enigmatic and influential treatiseSefer Yeṣirah, the Bookof Formation, which depicts the creation of the world by use of the twenty-twoletters of the Hebrew alphabet. The connection between the two is of greatconsequence in determining the period in whichSefer Yeṣirah was edited as wellas its history of acceptance and as such should be examined in a careful manner. In scholarly literature, the question of the relation between the laws of formationand the Book of Formation was mentioned by a few scholars, but has never beendiscussed in a comprehensive manner. The main purpose of this paper is to addressthis issue. The conclusion of the article that there is no such connection is two pronged.Sefer Yeṣirah is an abbreviation of a longer title, which was well known in the 10th century CE:Sefer Yeṣirat ha'Olam, the Book of the Formation of the World.Hilkhot Yeṣirah, on the other hand, does not refer to a title of a book but rather toa set of rules about formation, like the laws of Shabbat and the laws of witchcraft, which are mentioned in the same Talmudic discussion.

Abstract: The concept of Hassidism as "Kabbalah become ethos" was initially accepted by all researchers of Hassidism, despite the uncertainty surrounding this ethos. The article explores the essence of homiletic literature in early Hassidism through thee pistles sent by R. Abraham Katz of Kalisk (1741-1810) from Tiberius to his followers in Russia, and a teaching on the Torah portion of "Acharei Mot" from the book Pri HaAretz of his teacher R. Menahem Mendel of Vitebsk (1730-1788).The study of these epistles and homiletic literature reinforces the claim that themeeting between the Maggid of Mezeritch, the Kabbalist Dov Ber, with the BaalShem Tov changed the focus of Dov Ber's life from the asceticism of a learned Kabbalist to a search fordevekut (devotion) as the ability to span the gap between corporeal life and divinity by cleaving inwardly to God. R. Abraham of Kalisk's epistle to R. Shneur Zalman of Ladi, author of the book of Tania, suggests that the teachings inculcated by the Maggid were not geared at the intellectual attainment of his listeners but rather at inspiring them todevekut . This is what Buber means when he writes concerning the Tsaddik in The Hidden Light, "The words of his teachings are themselves embodied in their enactment."

Abstract: Some of the Hebrew mystical texts tend to make ample use of esotericism rhetoric, yet our ability to historically verify these claims is very scant. The Way of the Book: A Tribute to Zeev Gries [xvi]This article tackles this problem from a new angle. Literary analysis ofSeferYeṣirah shows that it contains many poetical features typical of oral traditions:alliteration, assonance, anaphora, parallelism, semantic compression, play ofwords, and beautiful visual images that serve as organizing principles. Mostimportant is the constant effort to use numerical systems as organizing principles .Thus this article claims that the motivations for garbing mystical ideas in abeautiful rhythmic song-like text is mnemonic – the need to remember the group'sunique esoteric ideas while not feeling free to put it into writing. The fact that thetext was edited and adapted time and again over many generations might explainthe lack of consistency in the use of those literary means.

Abstract: The article examines a sample of quotations from Rabbi Israel Baal Shem Tovfound in the sermons of the first Rebbe of Chernobyl, Rabbi Menachem Nahum Twersky. The same quote is given a different meaning in different contexts, not only among the various Messengers, but even in the writings of the Rebbe ofChernobyl himself. In many cases, it turns out that a quotation presented in the name of the Rabbi Israel Baal Shem Tov was designed according to the needs of the time during which that sermon was delivered, and therefore it is doubtful if the original idea can be recovered from such a quote.

Abstract: The first volume of the literary anthology Knesset Israel, edited by Shaul Pinhas Rabinowitz (Shefer), was printed in Warsaw in October 1886. Shortly afterwards a second edition appeared, identical to the first, except for the addition of a short article by the venerable scholar Eliezer Zvi Zweifel, "The Nonsense of Numerology," mocking gematriot, which can be used to prove anything. The article was rewritten in a second edition with many changes and appeared under the title "Mountains Hanging from a Thread." Evidently the blatant title and content of the first edition angered conservative readers, who saw in it mockery of something sacred; Rabinowitz was afraid of losing readers and causing harm to the purpose of the collection – propaganda for Hibbat Zion that would attract as wide areadership as possible from the Jewish public to the idea of settling Eretz Israel –and decided to rewrite the article in order to soften its offensive message. The rewriter also took the opportunity to introduce additional changes and to replace the rabbinic language in which Zweifel wrote with biblical equivalents that conformed to the style of maskilim until that time. It is noteworthy that doing so was in direct opposition to the trend of departure from the constraints of biblical language and the transition to a more flexible style, influenced by rabbinic language, that began at the same time and took over the Hebrew language completely, shaping it until today.

Abstract: The article presents a survey of the history of the National Library in Jerusalem as an inseparable chapter in the history of the modern Jewish settlement in Eretz Israel. It describes its metamorphoses: from the first initiative by Israel Dov Frumkin, editor of Havazelet and founder of the Montefiore Library; through Eliezer Ben Yehudah's attempt to establish a library as a secular center; the efforts of Bnai Brith and the founding of the Abravanel Library; and finally the founding of a major center that was the basis of the "National Library in Jerusalem." In the course of the survey the article describes the polemics over establishing the library from various aspects

Abstract: The article concerns the 1684 Sulzbach edition of the Zohar and its role in the history of the reception and canonization of the Zohar. It examines the context of the Sulzbach Zohar printing and argues that it was part of a larger printing project of the Sulzbach Kabbalistic circle which included the printing of the second volume of the Kabbalah Denudata in Frankfurt, and the printing of the Syriac version of the New Testament in Hebrew characters in Sulzbach. The article brings possible evidence of the involvement of Sabbateans in the Sulzbach Zohar printing project

Abstract: The question of the authority of rabbinic decrees and regulations is a point ofcontroversy between Maimonides and Ramban. Maimonides ruled that one whoviolates the "decrees and regulations and conducts" violates the obligation to heedthe words of the sages and is liable for punishment in the context of the laws ofrebellion. This position conflicts with that of Ramban, who asserted that the law ofrebellion does not apply to decrees and regulations because they are not explicitlyderived from the Torah. However an analysis of Maimonides' Commentary on theMishna reveals that the position presented there is closer to that of Rambanaccording to which decrees and regulations are commandments of the "seconddegree" and one who violates them transgresses the prohibition of "do not turnaside." The article suggests that while the Commentary on the Mishna was writtenby Maimonides in his youth, when he followed a conservative and accepted path, later on he took a more novel and unique direction, granting greater authority tothe sages so that one who transgresses the prohibition of "do not turn aside" alsofalls under the rubric of the biblical prohibition of rebellion

Abstract: The article explores a few characteristics of Jewish preaching in Byzantium.Preachers used to adopt free structures. Sometimes the sermon is very short andsometimes it is broad and lengthy. While Spanish preachers composedhomogeneous sermons, Byzantine preachers were less coherent. Byzantinepreachers included autobiographical details in their sermons while elsewhere thatwas avoided. The article also claims that Mordekhai Comtiyano probably based afew of the excurses in his commentary on the Torah on live situations of preaching.
