Intertextuality in the Bible
Abstract:
The birth annunciations to Sarah and the great woman of Shunem both use the phrase כעת חיה, “in due time” (Gen 18:10, 14; 2 Kgs 4:16-17). Moreover, these are the only attestations of this phrase in the Hebrew Bible. Several commentators have noted that this is probably an intentional connection. I make this argument in detail and trace some of its implications. I use the language and theory of intertextuality to argue that the connection is an open allusion—an intentional connection between texts that encourages the reader to identify additional, unstated connections between the texts but does not specify which of those connections are important. I also identify possible implications of the allusion for the interpretation of Genesis and 2 Kings.
