Abstract:
Discusses the escape of Rudolf Vrba and Alfred Wetzler from Auschwitz in April 1944, their report to the Working Group in Slovakia, and their attempts to save Hungarian Jewry. The report was sent to Jewish leaders in Budapest, but it was not publicized, and thousands of Hungarian Jews entered the deportation trains thinking that they were being "resettled". Contends that Vrba's memoirs, published in English in 1963, appeared in Hebrew in Israel only in 1998 because Israeli Holocaust researchers objected to his criticism of Hungarian and Slovakian Jewish leaders. States that Yehuda Bauer's book "Rethinking the Holocaust" (2001) claims that Vrba's bitter accusations against Jewish leaders are baseless. Bauer's response to Linn stresses the importance of the Auschwitz report and the efforts of the Working Group to make it known in the West. Claims, however, that it would have been difficult for the Budapest leadership to inform the Jews about the realities of Auschwitz because the Hungarians tended to disbelieve the information that they already had on Nazi atrocities, and that they did not have the time or the ability to resist in any case. Points, also, to errors in Linn's article.
