Abstract:
From 1933 to 1937 the Nazi government enacted various laws restricting Jewish economic activity, but the Jews were allowed to organize self-help projects, which are here described. Boycotts and harassment of Jews was not official government policy, but took place on the initiative of the Nazi Party or local governments. Academics, lawyers, doctors, scientists, and clerks suffered more than did businessmen, as the Nazis were sensitive to international trade repercussions. But in 1938 the Aryanization process was intensified and the self-help system ceased operation.
