Abstract:
Contends that the gospel of Matthew reflects a conflict between the proto-Christian community of Matthew's followers and Pharisaic Jews. Conjectures that there was no normative Judaism in Matthew's time, so it was in fact a "siblings' quarrel", in which the Pharisaic sect was victorious; proto-Christians were forced to break with Judaism. Therefore, Matthew resorted to anti-Pharisaic invectives, which were his means of self-defense. Contends that he is not responsible for the fact that after his death, these invectives were canonized as anti-Judaic ones.
