Abstract:
Puławy County was an administrative unit created by the German occupiers within the Lublin district of the Generalgouvernement. Before the war ca. 26,000 Jews lived in the area. In spring 1942, 9,000 Jews from Slovakia were brought to the region in nine transports. Most of these 35,000 Jews were killed by the Nazis in Bełżec (March-April 1942), in Sobibór (May 1942), and in Treblinka (October 1942). The labor camp at the military airfield near the town of Dęblin-Irena (now part of the town of Dęblin) was a special case. It operated until the end of the German occupation, July 1944, while the rest of the labor camps in the Lublin district were dismantled by November 1943. Among its ca. 1,000 inmates there were many women and ca. 100 children. The living conditions were relatively benign, which may be attributed to the personalities of the German commanders, as well as to the Jewish Lagerälteste Hermann Wenkart, a deportee from Vienna. Wenkart managed to maintain good relations with the Nazi camp administration, which may have contributed to the survival of the inmates. However, he was unable to rescue all of the children during the evacuation of the camp to Częstochowa in July 1944, and some of them perished.
