Abstract:
Against the background of demoralization and social collapse of the intelligentsia in the ghettos of the World War II period, Jewish physicians remained the only group that retained some professional and social status within Jewish society. This was due not only to their ability to cure, but also to their knowledge of languages and contact with populations, both Jewish and non-Jewish. Some physicians became members of Jewish councils, and others formed a kind of ghetto leadership. Not only could the doctors "delay death", they also did their utmost to create a limited sense of continuity with prewar life. They could render passive resistance to Nazi measures and rescue human lives. However, given that the liquidation of the ghettos often began with the destruction of ghetto hospitals and the deportation or murder of the patients, some Jewish physicians involuntarily became collaborators in these actions.
