Abstract:
Stresses the importance of Schleiermacher's political orientation, as propagated in preaching and teaching. He favored Jewish emancipation: to David Friedlaender's proposal that in order to win acceptance as German citizens, Jews convert to Christianity, giving up their ritual but not the articles of their faith, Schleiermacher responded that such a conversion would not only be meaningless but would also introduce harmful elements into Christianity; political rights should be independent of religion. Despite this attitude, however, and despite his frequentation of Jewish salons and his friendship with Henriette Herz, in his theology Schleiermacher denigrated Judaism as a dead religion of law, reward and punishment. The Old Testament was of no relevance to the New; Jesus' historical background was irrelevant to Christology. This view left its imprint on German Protestant theology into Nazi times and beyond.
