Abstract: Discusses the causes of the social crisis in 19th century Germany which led to the development of "völkisch" ideology and of antisemitism. The emancipated Jew was the symbol of the changes taking place, and the anti-capitalism of the masses was easily transformed into antisemitism. Envy arose due to the success of German Jews during this period. Compares and contrasts modern antisemitism with the old Christian anti-Judaism, noting that the German Churches' attitude was ambiguous - they rejected racism, but differentiated between "good" and "bad" antisemitism. "Good" antisemitism, which called for total separation of Jews and Christians, was advocated in order to protect Christians from Jewish influence.
