    Kurzfassung: This book is the completest work about life and works of Joseph Penso de Vega, the most prominent author of the Jewish Community of Amsterdam in the XVIIth century. This volume presents a very interdisciplinary study, because of the frequent contacts that the writer had among diasporas and the cultural relationship with Christians and laics. That meant a very intense cultural and literary exchange that Penso knew to represent it in his texts. In this sense, this study offers a very exact portrait –never made before–, not only about his cultural production but also about him as nexus between diasporas concerning religious aspects, History of culture and history of ideas, aspects ignored before but basics to understand his works.

    Kurzfassung: This study deepens our historical understanding of the North-African Jewish and Middle Eastern Jewish experience during WWII, which is often under- or mis-represented by the media in Israel, the Arab world, France, and Italy. Public, historical and sociocultural discourse is examined to clarify whether these communities are accepted by the world as \'Holocaust survivors\'. Further, it determines the extent to which their wartime history is revealed to Israeli society in its cultural performances. Importantly, this work addresses the reasons why the Holocaust of North African Jewry is absent from Israeli and world consciousness. Finally, the study contemplates the consequences of these phenomena for Israeli society as well as in the colonial countries of France and Italy

Ordnungspolizisten bewachten von Norwegen bis Italien die Deportationstransporte mit Juden in die Vernichtungslager im Osten. In Dänemark, in den Niederlanden, im Raum Marseille und in Rom führten sie Razzien gegen Juden durch. Die Einsätze der Ordnungspolizei waren aber keineswegs auf die jüdische Bevölkerung beschränkt. Breiten Raum nahmen die Aktionen gegen Partisanen, den örtlichen zivilen Widerstand und Streiks ein. Als Quellen dienen dem Autor unter anderem eine Fülle von großenteils bisher unveröffentlichten Dokumenten und Zeugenaussagen aus Strafverfahren gegen NS-Täter. Die nach Einheiten und Einsatzgebieten gegliederte Darstellung macht das Buch zu einem hochinformativen Nachschlagewerk. Die Publikation ergänzt die weithin beachteten Veröffentlichungen Wolfgang Curillas zur Ordnungspolizei im Baltikum und Weißrussland sowie in Polen.

    Kurzfassung: The Jew in Czech and Slovak Imagination,1938-89 is the first critical inquiry into the nature of anti-Jewish prejudices in both main parts of former Czechoslovakia. The authors identify anti-Jewish prejudices over almost fifty years of the twentieth century, focusing primarily on the post-Munich period and the Second World War (1938–45), the post-war reconstruction (1945–48), as well as the Communist rule with both its thaws and returns to hardline rule (1948–89). It is a provocative examination of the construction of the image of ‘the Jew’ in the Czech and Slovak majority societies, the assigning of character and other traits – real or imaginary – to individuals or groups. The book analyses the impact of these constructed images on the attitudes of the majority societies towards the Jews, and on Holocaust memory in the country

    Kurzfassung: In Lost in Translation, Found in Transliteration , Alex Kerner examines London’s Spanish andamp; Portuguese Jews’ congregation in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, as a community that delineated its identity not only along ethnic and religious lines, but also along the various languages spoken by its members. By zealously keeping Hebrew and Spanish for prayer and Portuguese for community administration, generations of wardens attempted to keep control over their community, alongside a tough censorial policy on book printing. Clinging to the Iberian languages worked as a bulwark against assimilation, adding language to religion as an additional identity component. As Spanish and Portuguese speaking generations were replaced with younger ones, English permeated daily and community life intensifying assimilationist trends

    Kurzfassung: The New Ethnic Studies in Latin America aims at going beyond and against much of Jewish Latin American historiography, situating Jewish-Latin Americans in the larger multi-ethnic context of their countries. Senior and junior scholars from various countries joined together to challenge commonly held assumptions, accepted ideas, and stable categories about ethnicity in Latin America in general and Jewish experiences on this continent in particular. This volume brings to the discussions on Jewish life in Latin America less heard voices of women, non-affiliated Jews, and intellectuals. Community institutions are not at center stage, conflicts and tensions are brought to the fore, and a multitude of voices pushes aside images of homogeneity. Authors in this tome look at Jews’ multiple homelands: their country of birth, their country of residence, and their imagined homeland of Zion

    Kurzfassung: "The Scientification of the "Jewish Question" under National Socialism describes the attempt of a considerable number of German scholars to counter the vanishing influence of religious prejudices against the Jews with a new antisemitic rationale. As anti-Jewish stereotypes of an old-fashioned soteriological kind had become dysfunctional under the pressure of secularization, a new, more objective explanation was needed to justify the age-old danger of Judaism in the present. In the 1930s a new research field called "Judenforschung" (Jew research) emerged. Its leading figures amalgamated racial and religious features to verify the existence of an everlasting "Jewish problem". Along with that they offered scholarly concepts for its solution"--

    Kurzfassung: »Gott liebt die Juden«. Erst während des Zweiten Vatikanischen Konzils brachte die Kirche es über sich, diese Erklärung in ihre Verlautbarungen aufzunehmen. Zuvor hatte sie jahrtausendelang gelehrt, dass das Volk, dem die Kreuzigung Jesu zur Last gelegt wird, von Gott verflucht sei und bleibe. In den 1940er Jahren schwieg die Katholische Kirche überwiegend, als Juden von den Nationalsozialisten zu Millionen ermordet wurden. Wie kam es dazu, dass eine Institution mit der Aura der Unfehlbarkeit einen der revolutionärsten ideologischen Paradigmenwechsel der Neuzeit unternahm? Die Gründe für diesen radikalen Schnitt entspringen den Jahren kurz vor dem Holocaust, aus einem verzweifelten theologischen Kampf, den eine kleine Gruppe katholischer Konvertiten bestritt, um ihre neuentdeckte Glaubensgemeinschaft vor dem Einfluss der nationalsozialistischen Ideologien zu schützen. Insbesondere der ehemalige Jude Johannes Oesterreicher sowie der einstige Protestant Karl Thieme überwanden diesen besonders fraglichen Aspekt der katholischen Kirchengeschichte, indem sie in jahrelangem Engagement Debatten in akademischen Schriften anstießen, sich für die Volksbildung einsetzten und ihre Interessen auch im Vatikan selbst durchzusetzen versuchten. Doch ihr letztendlicher Erfolg war nicht die Folge immer neuer Aufrufe zu mehr Menschlichkeit, sondern der Neuentdeckung bis dahin vernachlässigter Teile der Heiligen Schrift. It was a center of rich varieties of Orthodox Judaism, Jewish Socialism, Diaspora Nationalism, Zionism, and Polonization. This volume is the first to reflect on the entire history of the Warsaw Jewish community, from its inception in the late 18th century to its emergence as a Jewish metropolis within a few generations, to its destruction during the German occupation and tentative re-emergence in the postwar period. The highly original contributions collected here investigate Warsaw Jewry’s religious and cultural life, press and publications, political life, and relations with the surrounding Polish society. This monumental volume is dedicated to Professor Antony Polonsky, chief historian of the new Warsaw Museum for the History of Polish Jews, on the occasion of his 75th birthday.     Kurzfassung: Zeev Levin seeks to provide a comprehensive picture of government efforts to socialize the Jewish masses in Uzbekistan, a process in which the central Soviet government took part, together with the local, republican and regional administrations and Soviet Jewish activists. This research presents a chapter in the history of the Jews in Uzbekistan, as well as contributing to the study of the socialization process of the Jewish population in the USSR in general. It also contributes to the study of relations among political and government bodies and decision makers. The study is based on archival documents and provides a unique glance at the implementation of Soviet nationalities policy towards Bukharan Jews while comparing it to other national minority groups in Uzbekistan

    Kurzfassung: A Political and Economic History of the Jews of Afghanistan by Sara Koplik describes the situation of Jews in that country during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, particularly 1839-1952. It examines the political, economic and social conditions they faced as religious minorities. The work focuses upon harsh governmental economic policies of the 1930s and 1940s spearheaded by 'Abd al-Majid Khan Zabuli which caused the impoverishment and suffering of both the local community and refugees from Soviet Central Asia. The question of Nazi influence in Afghanistan is addressed, with the author arguing that it was mainly limited to the economic sphere. An examination of the appeal of Zionism and the community's immigration to Israel is included

    Kurzfassung: In Jews and Christians in Denmark: From the Middle Ages to Recent Times, circa 1100–1948 , Martin Schwarz Lausten investigates how the Church and society followed the European antijudaistic tradition using insults, adversities and attempted conversions during Catholic times from around 1100 and Protestant times starting around 1536. In spite of the tolerant policies of integration initiated by the government beginning in the 1800’s, anti-Semitic movements arose among priests, professors and local authorities. However, during the German occupation (1940–1945) priests and many others assisted the 7,000 Danish Jews in their escape to Sweden. Based on Jewish and Christian sources, Jewish reactions to life in Denmark are also examined
