Abstract:
Traces views of scholars, writers, and theologians on the problematic of Holocaust response and societal dimensions of Holocaust remembrance, expressing concern regarding trends which trivialize or universalize the specifically Jewish tragedy. Argues against the position of some Jewish authorities that the Holocaust has been given too much attention. Contends that, despite public attention, there is little corresponding public knowledge. Survivors testify by telling and writing of their experiences; nonwitnesses testify by reading, studying, and writing about the Holocaust. But this knowledge must be translated into deeds so that the future may be meaningful. Notes that it is important to remember that one bears witness in a culture that has, to a large extent, forgotten how to listen.
