    Abstract: "In his three-volume history, Antony Polonsky provides a comprehensive survey—socio-political, economic, and religious—of the Jewish communities of eastern Europe from 1350 to the present. Until the Second World War, this was the heartland of the Jewish world: nearly three and a half million Jews lived in Poland alone, while nearly three million more lived in the Soviet Union. Although the majority of the Jews of Europe and the United States, and many of the Jews of Israel, originate from these lands, their history there is not well known. Rather, it is the subject of mythologizing and stereotypes that fail both to bring out the specific features of the Jewish civilization which emerged there and to illustrate what was lost. Jewish life, though often poor materially, was marked by a high degree of spiritual and ideological intensity and creativity. Antony Polonsky recreates this lost world—brutally cut down by the Holocaust and less brutally but still seriously damaged by the Soviet attempt to destroy Jewish culture.     Abstract: "Jewish voting is both distinctive and paradoxical. Stereotypes about the voting habits of American Jews include that they vote at unusually high levels, that they're all liberals, that they vote overwhelmingly for Democratic candidates in disregard to their self-interest, and that Israel is their most important issue. Not only are all of those claims wrong, but, more important, they obscure aspects of Jews' voting behavior that are much more interesting. This book uncovers new perspectives on Jews' political choices by analyzing the unprecedented amount of survey data that is now available, including both surveys of Jews and surveys that permit contrasting the voting of Jews with that of comparable non-Jews. The data suggest several mysteries about Jewish voting. It is known that more Jews are Democrats than are liberals, but there has not been a previous exploration of why more politically conservative Jews are not Republicans. Rather than all Jews being flaming liberals, a substantial number of social issue liberals favor a smaller government. The Democratic presidential vote of Jews was about the same in 2012 as in 1932, paradoxical stability given that the same people would not have voted in these two elections. And while most American Jews care about Israel, most also are ambivalent about many of its policies; as a result, they are less likely to vote on the basis of what Israelis consider Israel's best interest. A fresh picture of Jews' political behaviors shows Jews are no longer politically monolithic. They vote on the basis of their self-interest and their values, but not all Jews share the same self-interest or the same values."--

    Abstract: Cartoons uniting visual representation with cultural associations, can cause devastation. One picture may save a thousand words but we will never know how many hundreds of thousands of lives were not saved, how many millions of lives were not even lived, because of the climate of fear and of hate prompted and promoted by the anti-Semitic pictures of Satanic horned Jews. From the 12th to the 21st century, these cartoons, simplifying and intensifying fears and hatreds, were powerful tools in the spread of anti-Semitism. These images first appeared in medieval Christianity, reappeared in 19th and 20th century Racialism, Fascism and Marxism and today are part of the visual images of contemporary Islam; four absolutely different belief systems with different life cycles all sharing the exact same indelible meme with its exact same visual expression targeting the exact same expiatory victim. For a thousand years, the power of this fabrication has erased existential realities and, with devastating consequences, the fear generated by the image of the demonised Jew has been reflected onto the real Jew. Some of the cartoons in this book may shock our sensibilities, to many they are a vital shared social truth, to others a vile experienced reality

    Abstract: In Antisemitic Conspiracy Theories in the Early Modern Iberian World: Narratives of Fear and Hatred , François Soyer offers the first detailed historical analysis of antisemitic conspiracy theories in Spain, Portugal and their overseas colonies between 1450 and 1750. These conspiracy theories accused Jews and conversos , the descendants of medieval Jewish converts to Christianity, of deadly plots and blamed them for a range of social, religious, military and economic problems. Ultimately, many Iberian antisemitic conspiracy theorists aimed to create a ‘moral panic’ about the converso presence in Iberian society, thereby justifying the legitimacy of ethnic discrimination within the Church and society. Moreover, they were also exploited by some churchmen seeking to impose an idealized sense of communal identity upon the lay faithful

Memories that Lie a Little, however, challenges this view, shedding new light on Jewish experiences during the military dictatorship. If, then, the dictatorship was not actually anti-Semitic in the strictest sense of the term, why is it remembered as such? Historical research is complemented here by a reconstruction of the ways in which the notion of the regime's anti-Semitism was crafted from early on, and an examination of its uses, as well as the changes that this narrative underwent in the following years."--

    Abstract: In The Invention of Race in the European Middle Ages, Geraldine Heng questions the common assumption that the concepts of race and racisms only began in the modern era. Examining Europe's encounters with Jews, Muslims, Africans, Native Americans, Mongols, and the Romani ('Gypsies'), from the 12th through 15th centuries, she shows how racial thinking, racial law, racial practices, and racial phenomena existed in medieval Europe before a recognizable vocabulary of race emerged in the West.     Abstract: In A Stake in the Ground , Michael Schraer explores the economic functions of real estate amongst the Jews of the medieval crown of Aragon. He challenges the view of medieval Jews as primarily money-lenders and merchants, finding compelling evidence for extensive property trading and investment. Jews are found as landlords to Christian tenants, transferring land in dowries, wills and gifts. Property holdings were often extremely valuable. For some, property was a major part of their asset portfolios. Whilst many property transactions were linked to the credit boom, land also acted as a liquid and tradeable investment asset in its own right. This is a key contribution to the economic history of medieval Iberia and of medieval Jews

    Abstract: "Pogroms and blood libels constitute the two classical and most extreme manifestations of tsarist antisemitism. They were often closely intertwined in history and memory, not least because the accusation of blood libel, the allegation that Jews murder Christian children to use their blood for ritual purposes, frequently triggered anti-Jewish violence. Such events were and are considered central to the Jewish experience in late tsarist Russia, the only country on earth with large scale anti-Jewish violence in the early twentieth century. Boasting its break from the tsarist period, the Soviet regime proudly claimed to have eradicated these forms of antisemitism. But, alas, life was much more complicated. The phenomenon and the memory of pogroms and blood libels in different areas of interwar Soviet Union-including Ukraine, Belorussia, Russia and Central Asia-as well as, after World War II, in the newly annexed territories of Lithuania, Western Ukraine and Western Belorussia are a reminder of continuities in the midst of revolutionary ruptures. The persistence, the permutation, and the responses to anti-Jewish violence and memories of violence suggest that Soviet Jews (and non-Jews alike) cohabited with a legacy of blood that did not vanish. This book traces the "afterlife" of these extreme manifestations of antisemitism in the USSR, and in doing so sheds light on the broader question of the changing position of Jews in Soviet society. One notable rupture in manifestations of antisemitism from tsarist to Soviet times included the virtual disappearance-at least during the interwar period-of the tight link between pogroms and blood allegations, indeed a common feature in the waves of anti-Jewish violence that erupted during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries." --

    Abstract: Sowohl im rechten und linken politischen Spektrum als auch im radikalen Islam lässt sich der Hass auf Juden einerseits ideengeschichtlich nachzeichnen, andererseits an aktuellen Beispielen belegen. Samuel Salzborn versteht Antisemitismus als negative Leitidee der Moderne, die auf einer grundsätzlichen Ablehnung von Aufklärung, Liberalismus und Rationalität fußt. Die antisemitische Denkweise zeigt sich unter anderem in der Unwilligkeit, abstrakte, komplexe oder ambivalente Strukturen anzuerkennen, die die moderne Welt kennzeichnen, und fußt auf einer Fantasie, die Juden als homogenes Kollektiv wahrnimmt. Dies kulminiert in der Vorstellung einer "jüdischen Weltverschwörung", die ein strukturelles Merkmal sowohl rechtsextremer, antiimperialistischer und islamistischer antisemitischer Positionen darstellt. In Bezug auf den Staat Israel drückt sich der Antisemitismus, so Salzborn, in einer Strategie der "Dämonisierung, Delegitimerung und Doppelstandardisierung" aus, die der Autor auch der internationalen BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions)-Kampagne attestiert.

    Abstract: Sartre avait montré dans Réflexions sur la question juive comment le juif est défini en creux par le regard de l’antisémite. Delphine Horvilleur choisit ici de retourner la focale en explorant l’antisémitisme tel qu’il est perçu par les textes sacrés, la tradition rabbinique et les légendes juives. Dans tout ce corpus dont elle fait l’exégèse, elle analyse la conscience particulière qu’ont les juifs de ce qui habite la psyché antisémite à travers le temps, et de ce dont elle « charge » le juif, l’accusant tour à tour d’empêcher le monde de faire « tout » ; de confisquer quelque chose au groupe, à la nation ou à l’individu (procès de l’« élection ») ; d’incarner la faille identitaire ; de manquer de virilité et d’incarner le féminin, le manque, le « trou », la béance qui menace l’intégrité de la communauté. Cette littérature rabbinique que l’auteur décortique ici est d’autant plus pertinente dans notre période de repli identitaire que les motifs récurrents de l’antisémitisme sont revitalisés dans les discours de l’extrême droite et de l’extrême gauche (notamment l’argument de l’« exception juive » et l’obsession du complot juif). Mais elle offre aussi et surtout des outils de résilience pour échapper à la tentation victimaire : la tradition rabbinique ne se soucie pas tant de venir à bout de la haine des juifs (peine perdue…) que de donner des armes pour s’en prémunir. Elle apporte ainsi, à qui sait la lire, une voie de sortie à la compétition victimaire qui caractérise nos temps de haine et de rejet.

    Abstract: Nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg wurde München zum Schauplatz ungewöhnlicher politischer Konstellationen: Kurt Eisner wurde im November 1918 der erste jüdische Ministerpräsident eines deutschen Staates, während jüdische Schriftsteller wie Gustav Landauer, Ernst Toller und Erich Mühsam sich im April 1919 für die Räterepubliken engagierten. Die jüdische Gemeinde war eher konservativ ausgerichtet, und selbst die orthodoxen Mitglieder besuchten nach dem Synagogenbesuch gerne das Hofbräuhaus. Doch Anfang der zwanziger Jahre gab es bereits einen Nazi als Polizeipräsidenten, antijüdische Tendenzen in Politik, Presse und Kirche sowie Judenausweisungen und offene Gewalt gegen jüdische Bürger auf der Straße. Die »Stadt Hitlers« wie Thomas Mann die spätere »Hauptstadt der Bewegung« bereits im Juli 1923 nannte, wurde zum Ausgangspunkt für den beispiellosen Aufstieg der hier gegründeten nationalsozialistischen Partei.

    Abstract: Fußball wird von Millionen von Menschen in Deutschland gespielt, von noch mehr Fans im Stadion oder am Bildschirm verfolgt. Fußball ist ein kulturelles Ereignis - und gleichzeitig ein Bereich, in dem Diskriminierung und besonders Antisemitismus noch immer gegenwärtig sind, so der Autor Florian Schubert. Mit antisemitischen Stereotypen werden seit jeher gegnerische Spieler, Fans und auch Schiedsrichter diskreditiert, unabhängig davon, ob es sich um Juden handelt oder nicht. Florian Schubert eruiert, in welcher Form und in welchen Kontexten Antisemitismus im Fußball seit den 1980er Jahren in der BRD und in der DDR auftaucht und wie er fußballintern bewertet wird. Er untersucht die Funktion antisemitischen Verhaltens bei Fans, Spielern und Vereinsverantwortlichen - von Nationalmannschaft und DFB bis hin zu regionalen Vereinen. Am Ende steht die Frage, ob das Stadion in Bezug auf diskriminierendes Verhalten eine Sonderstellung einnimmt oder als Brennglas gesellschaftlicher Phänomene gesehen werden kann.

    Abstract: Martin Heidegger (1889–1976) is considered one of the most influential philosophers of the twentieth century in spite of his well-known transgressions-his complicity with National Socialism and his inability to show remorse or compassion for its victims. In The Duplicity of Philosophy’s Shadow, Elliot R. Wolfson intervenes in a debate that has seen much attention in scholarly and popular media from a unique perspective, as a scholar of Jewish mysticism and philosophy who has been profoundly influenced by Heidegger’s work. Wolfson sets out to probe Heidegger’s writings to expose what remains unthought. In spite of Heidegger’s explicit anti-Semitic statements, Wolfson reveals some crucial aspects of his thinking―including criticism of the biological racism and militant apocalypticism of Nazism―that betray an affinity with dimensions of Jewish thought: the triangulation of the concepts of homeland, language, and peoplehood; Jewish messianism and the notion of historical time as the return of the same that is always different; inclusion, exclusion, and the status of the other; the problem of evil in kabbalistic symbolism. Using Heidegger’s own methods, Wolfson reflects on the inextricable link of truth and untruth and investigates the matter of silence and the limits of speech. He challenges the tendency to bifurcate the relationship of the political and the philosophical in Heidegger’s thought, but parts company with those who write off Heidegger as a Nazi ideologue. Ultimately, The Duplicity of Philosophy’s Shadow argues, the greatness and relevance of Heidegger’s work is that he presents us with the opportunity to think the unthinkable as part of our communal destiny as historical beings. --

Historians have shown beyond doubt that many Italians were complicit in the Holocaust, yet Italy is still known as the Axis state that helped Jews. Shira Klein uncovers how Italian Jews, though victims of Italian persecution, promoted the view that Fascist Italy was categorically good to them. She shows how the Jews' experience in the decades before World War II - during which they became fervent Italian patriots while maintaining their distinctive Jewish culture - led them later to bolster the myth of Italy's wartime innocence in the Fascist racial campaign.     Abstract: Antisemitism, Islamophobia, and Interreligious Hermeneutics: Ways of Seeing the Religious Other , edited by Emma O’Donnell Polyakov, examines the hermeneutics of interreligious encounter in contexts of conflict. It investigates the implicit judgments of Judaism and Islam that often arise in response to these conflicts, and explores the implications of these interpretations for relations between Jews, Christians, and Muslims. Addressing antisemitism and Islamophobia through the tools of interreligious hermeneutics, this volume brings together three distinct discourses: the study of ancient and new tropes of antisemitism as they appear in today’s world; research into contemporary expressions of fear or suspicion of Islam; and philosophical reflections on the hermeneutics of interreligious encounters
