Abstract:
After considering the rubric ‘Latin American-Jewish literature,’ this article traces the regional historical-cultural context, and considers literature produced by Jewish writers on both sides of the Rio de la Plata: Buenos Aires and Montevideo. Without limiting writers to any single category, as most navigate across all these motifs, the analysis arranges and reviews texts written by the ‘founders’ (Gerchunoff, Tiempo, Grunberg, Eichelbaum), and those who address Israel-Diaspora relations (Rozitchner, Aguinis, Feierstein); the underside of official history (Bortnik, Rivera, Verbitsky, Vinas); issues of identity, integration, acculturation, assimilation and political militancy (Chejfec, Costantini, Dujovne Ortiz, Goloboff, Cozarinsky, Kohan, Orgambide, Rozenmacher); humor (Blaisten, Shua, Steimberg, Szichman) and poetry by Futoransky, Gelman, Kamenszain, Pizarnik, Szpumberg and Toker). On the Uruguayan side, the emphasis is on Porzecanski, and on Rosencof’s militancy.
