Abstract:
Upon her husband's death in the Battle of Mohács against the Ottoman invaders in 1526, the Queen Maria (a granddaughter of Ferdinand and Isabella) governed Hungary as regent in the name of her brother, Ferdinand I, who was the Archduke of Austria. During her reign, Mary gave approval to persecute the Jews in Bratislava and in other towns under her rule. The Jews of Hungary and its environs were intermittently persecuted under the following Habsburg regimes.
