Abstract:
Stresses the importance of using the oral testimonies of survivors. This type of evidence expands our perspective on the Holocaust, "democratizing" it by including simple people, as well as leaders, and by providing the view of victims, whereas much of Holocaust history thus far has been based on perpetrator testimony or documents. Further, oral testimony of survivors provides emotional cues to Jewish reactions to various kinds of suffering. Sensitivity is required on the part of the interviewer, who is a partner in the interview process. Discusses his interviews with Jews who found refuge from Nazi persecution in Shanghai, who relate how they were treated by the Japanese occupiers.
Note:
With the example of Jewish refugees who fled to Shanghai.
