Tortosa Disputation, Tortosa, Spain, 1413-1414
Abstract:
Isaac Nathan was head of the Jewish community in Arles and the most prominent leader of Provencal Jewry in the 15th century. In his work on ethics, "Me'ametz koah", he describes the dire results of the disputation of Tortosa (1413-14) and the iniquity of its instigator, the apostate Joshua Lorki. He lays the blame for a large part of the riots and forced conversions which followed the disputation on the Dominican preacher Vincent Ferrer. Nathan describes a sermon delivered by Ferrer against Conversos who continued to practice Judaism in secret, and he describes the way of life of these Conversos. Discusses possible sources of Nathan's information, showing that he may have heard Ferrer preaching in Arles and that many Conversos fled Aragon and settled in Arles, so that Nathan's account may in fact be first-hand and not second-hand as has been thought.
