Rezension: Die Autoren führen zahlreiche Beispiele aus allen Bereichen des gesellschaftlichen Lebens in Deutschland an, in denen sie alltäglichen Antisemitismus konstatieren. Hass-Parolen auf antiisraelischen Demonstrationen in Berlin, Frankfurt, im Ruhrgebiet, einseitige Berichterstattung und Kritik an Israel in Medien, Parteien (SPD, Linke), evangelischer Kirche, unter Intellektuellen (Martin Walser, Günter Grass, Jakob Augstein "haben den Antisemitismus salonfähig gemacht"). Sie haben viele Gespräche geführt, mit einem israelischen Journalisten in Berlin oder der dortigen Leiterin des Jüdischen Museums, die von ihren Erfahrungen, Befindlichkeiten erzählen und die versuchen, eine Erklärung für den Antisemitismus im Nachkriegsdeutschland zu finden. Das Buch klärt über den in Deutschland vorhandenen Antisemitismus auf, macht die Angst der hier lebenden Juden deutlich. Für eine legitime Kritik an Israel fordern die Autoren objektive Informationsgrundlagen. Dafür bietet das Buch zu wenig: Kritik wird in Nebensätzen und verkürzt behandelt, wichtige kritische Stimmen aus Israel fehlen völlig. Zur Diskussion. (2)

    Abstract: Die wissenschaftliche Beschäftigung mit dem Judentum an der Evangelisch-Theologischen Fakultät der Universität Tübingen begann mit der Berufung Adolf Schlatters (1852- 938) zum Sommersemester 1898. Mit Schlatters Nachfolger, dem Neutestamentler Gerhard Kittel (1888- 948), der während der Weimarer Republik mit jüdischen Kollegen zusammenarbeitete, erreichte sie einen ersten Höhepunkt. Aufgrund judenfeindlicher Äusserungen Schlatters und wegen der Verstrickung Kittels in den Nationalsozialismus waren der Neubeginn der Arbeit nach dem 2. Weltkrieg und die Gründung des Institutum Judaicum durch Otto Michel (1903- 993), der selbst Mitglied der NSDAP gewesen war, historisch belastet. Michels Bestreben war darauf gerichtet, nach der Schoah jüdische und christliche Forscher wieder zusammenzubringen; zugleich verschwieg er aber seine eigene Vergangenheit und konnte nicht an die Kooperationen der Weimarer Zeit anknüpfen. Dieser Band versammelt Beiträge zur Geschichte der Tübinger "Judentumsforschung", die die Frage nach dem bleibenden Einfluss Adolf Schlatters, die Geschichte des Institutum Judaicum bis zu Martin Hengel (1926- 009), Otto Michels Hebräerbriefkommentar und die zeitgeschichtliche Situation im Tübingen der 1950er und 1960er Jahre in den Blick nehmen

    Abstract: In dem Essay-Dokumentenband „Nachkriegswege nach Volkswagen. Jüdische Überlebende zwischen Befreiung und neuer Identität“ werden vier Lebenswege vorgestellt, anhand derer deutlich wird, daß Überlebende des Holocaust nach 1945 versuchten, sich mit Unterstützung der Alliierten einen Weg zurück ins Leben zu bahnen. Dokumente aus dem Archiv des ITS illustrieren diese Neuanfänge ebenso wie die davor erlittene Verfolgung. Die Historische Kommunikation der Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft und der ITS kamen überein, die Nachkriegswege dieser vier Jüdinnen und Juden exemplarisch für den Neuanfang nach der Befreiung zu rekonstruieren. Dabei sollte das Hauptaugenmerk der drei vorgeschalteten Aufsätze auf dem verwaltungstechnischen Umgang im Nationalsozialismus und in der Nachkriegszeit, dem Leben im „Transit“ und der Subjektivierung der vormaligen Opfer durch Betonung ihrer aus den dokumentarischen Unterlagen ersichtlichen Entscheidungen liegen.

    Abstract: The attitude of Jews living in the medieval Christian world to Jews who converted to Christianity or to Christians seeking to join the Jewish faith reflects the central traits that make up Jewish self-identification. The Jews saw themselves as a unique group chosen by God, who expected them to play a specific and unique role in the world. This study researches fully for the first time the various aspects of the way European Jews regarded members of their own fold in the context of lapses into another religion. It attempts to understand whether they regarded the issue of conversion with self-confidence or with suspicion, and whether their attitude was based on a clear theological position, or on issues of socialisation. The book will primarily interest students and lecturers of Jewish/Christian relations, the Middle Ages, Jews in the Medieval period, and inter-religious research.

    Abstract: "From 1938 until 1943 - before the German occupation and accompanying Holocaust - Fascist Italy drafted and enforced a comprehensive set of anti-Semitic laws. Notwithstanding later rationalizations, the laws were enforced and administered with a high degree of severity and resulted in serious, and in some cases permanent, damage to the Italian Jewish community. Written from the perspective of an American legal scholar, this book constitutes the first truly comprehensive survey of the Race Laws in the English language. Based on an exhaustive review of Italian legal, administrative, and judicial sources, together with archives of the Italian Jewish community, Professor Michael A. Livingston demonstrates the zeal but also the occasional ambivalence and contradictions with which the Race Laws were applied and assimilated by the Italian legal order and ordinary citizens. Although frequently depressing, the history of the Race Laws also involves numerous examples of personal courage and idealism, and provides a useful and timely study of what happens when otherwise decent people are confronted with an evil and unjust legal order"--

Den Auftakt bildete die Verdrängung der jüdischen Juristen aus ihren Berufen. Wie dieser Prozess in Hamburg verlaufen ist, beschreibt Heiko Morisse in seiner zweibändigen Untersuchung.Band 1, eine aktualisierte und erweiterte Neuauflage seines 2003 erschienenen Buchs "Jüdische Rechtsanwälte in Hamburg", behandelt die Ausgrenzung und Verfolgung der Hamburger jüdischen Rechtsanwälte, Band 2 die berufliche Verdrängung der beamteten Juristen in Hamburg, insbesondere der Richter, Staatsanwälte und Verwaltungsjuristen. Um die Auswirkungen der nationalsozialistischen Ausgrenzungspolitik auf die Betroffenen erfahrbar werden zu lassen, werden neben den konkreten Umständen der beruflichen "Ausschaltung" auch die weiteren Verfolgungsetappen von der Vertreibung über Deportation bis hin zur Ermordung beschrieben. Beide Bände enthalten einen ausführlichen biografischen Teil, in dem das Schicksal von insgesamt über 360 Juristen in Einzelbiografien skizziert wird. Because Jewish musicians and composers were, by 1933, the principal conveyors of Germany's historic traditions and the ideals of German culture, the isolation, exile and persecution of Jewish musicians by the Nazis became an act of musical self-mutilation. Michael Haas looks at the actual contribution of Jewish composers in Germany and Austria before 1933, at their increasingly precarious position in Nazi Europe, their forced emigration before and during the war, their ambivalent relationships with their countries of refuge, such as Britain and the United States and their contributions within the radically changed post-war music environment. -- Jacket

    Abstract: While the transmission of Greek philosophy and science via the Muslim world to western Europe in the Middle Ages has been closely scrutinized, the fate of the Arabic philosophical and scientific legacy in later centuries has received less attention, a fault this volume aims to correct. The authors in this collection discuss in particular the radical ideas associated with Averroism that are attributed to the Aristotle commentator Ibn Rushd (1126-1198) and challenge key doctrines of the Abrahamic religions. This volume examines what happened to Averroes’s philosophy during the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Did early modern thinkers really no longer pay any attention to the Commentator? Were there undercurrents of Averroism after the sixteenth century? How did Western authors in this period contextualise Averroes and Arabic philosophy within their own cultural heritage? How different was the Averroes they created as a philosopher in a European tradition from Ibn Rushd, the theologian, jurist and philosopher of the Islamic tradition?
