    Abstract: Die vorliegende Dissertationsschrift beschäftigt sich mit Leben und Werk des deutsch-jüdischen Nervenarztes und Psychotherapeuten Ernst Jolowicz. Dieser wurde, trotz seiner regen wissenschaftlichen Tätigkeit - unter anderem in Leipzig, bisher kaum von der medizinhistorischen Forschung berücksichtigt. Erstmalig rekonstruiert nun diese Arbeit die Biografie des Arztes vollständig und ordnet seine zahlreichen Publikationen unter anderem vor dem Hintergrund der Entwicklung der Psychotherapie und der Diskussion über traumatische Erkrankungen des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts ein. Jolowicz‘ Schriften erschienen in einem historisch äußerst bewegten Zeitraum: Sowohl in den letzten Jahren des Kaiserreichs als auch während der Weimarer Republik und dem beginnenden Dritten Reich veröffentlichte der Mediziner umfangreich und setzte sich sowohl für die Etablierung der Psychotherapie als ärztliche Disziplin als auch für ein patientenorientiertes, methodenübergreifendes Herangehen ein. Nach Adolf Hitlers Machtergreifung emigrierte Jolowicz zunächst nach Frankreich und später in die USA, wo er erneut wissenschaftlich arbeitete. Anhand dieser aufgespürten Facetten soll eine angesichts der wechselvollen deutschen Geschichte im erheblichen Maße beeinflusste Wissenschaftlerbiografie exemplarisch begreifbar gemacht werden. Ein besonderer Fokus wird weiterhin auf Jolowicz‘ Tätigkeit als Frontarzt während des Ersten Weltkrieges gelegt. Seine Erfahrungen, welche er an den Schützengräben der Westfront und als ärztlicher Leiter eines Posener Militärkrankenhauses gemacht hatte, schlugen sich in diversen Aufsätzen nieder. Durch die Auseinandersetzung mit diesen versucht die Dissertation zeittypische psychotherapeutische Entwicklungen während des Krieges offenzulegen und erörtert die Originalität inhaltlicher sowie methodologischer Ansätze Jolowicz‘.

    Abstract: Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis, began his intellectual life with the Jewish Bible and also ended it with it. He began by reading the Philippson Bible together, especially with his father Jacob Freud, and ended by studying the figure of Moses. This study systematically traces this preoccupation and shows that the Jewish Bible was a constant reference for Freud and determined his Jewish identity. This is shown by analysing family documents, religious instruction and references to the Bible in Freud's writings and correspondence.

    Abstract: This study explores the identity of the Bene Israel caste from India and its assimilation into Israeli society. The large immigration from India to Israel started in the early 1950s and continued until the early 1970s. Initially, these immigrants struggled hard as they faced many problems such as the language barrier, cultural differences, a new climate, geographical isolation, and racial discrimination. This analysis focuses on the three major aspects of the integration process involving the Bene Israel: economic, socio-cultural and political. The study covers the period from the early fifties to the present. I will focus on the origin of the Bene Israel, which has evolved after their immigration to Israel; from a Hindu–Muslim lifestyle and customs they integrated into the Jewish life of Israel. Despite its ethnographic nature, this study has theological implications as it is an encounter between Jewish monotheism and Indian polytheism. [...]

    Abstract: Am 17. Februar 2019 wäre Walter Grab 100 Jahre alt geworden. Sein persönlicher Werdegang spiegelt die Herausforderungen und politischen Verwerfungen des 20. Jahrhunderts wider. Als Historiker hat er wichtige Beiträge zur Demokratiegeschichte und ihrer Verbindung zur Emanzipation der Juden geleistet. Insbesondere die Französische Revolution und ihre Wirkungsgeschichte haben ihn lebenslang beschäftigt. Dabei stand auch die Frage im Mittelpunkt, weshalb die Ideen der Revolution in Deutschland nicht den gleichen Erfolg hatten wie etwa in Frankreich oder England. Diese Forschungen verknüpfte er mit einem anderen großen Thema, zu dem er ebenfalls bedeutende Beiträge geleistet hat: Dem Verhältnis zwischen der Demokratiebewegung und der Emanzipation der Juden in Europa. Im Rahmen eines interdisziplinären Kolloquiums am Europa Kolleg und dem Institut für die Geschichte der deutschen Juden in Hamburg wurden seine Arbeiten gewürdigt und mit der Frage nach der Zukunft der Demokratie in Europa verknüpft werden. Der Band stellt die Ergebnisse einer breiteren Öffentlichkeit vor. Mit einem Grußwort des Kultursenators Dr. Carsten Brosda.     Abstract: On February 17, 2019, Walter Grab would have turned 100. His personal career reflects the challenges and political upheavals of the 20th century. As a historian, he made important contributions to the history of democracy and its connection to the emancipation of the Jews. In particular, the French Revolution and its history of impact have occupied him throughout his life. He also focused on the question of why the ideas of the Revolution did not have the same success in Germany as they did, for example, in France or England. He linked this research to another major topic to which he also made significant contributions: The relationship between the democracy movement and the emancipation of Jews in Europe. In the context of an interdisciplinary colloquium at the Europa Kolleg Hamburg and the Institute for the History of German Jews in Hamburg, his work was honored and linked to the question of the future of democracy in Europe. This volume presents the results to a broader public. With a greeting by the Senator for Culture Dr. Carsten Brosda.     Abstract: "In Hispanojewish Archaeology, Alexander Bar-Magen Numhauser provides the first book-length archaeological exploration of the Jewish presence in late antique and early medieval Hispania. Using epigraphic, numismatic, architectural, and other archaeological remains, this volume describes the multiple cultural expressions of a vibrant Jewish community that emerged as part of the Mediterranean Diaspora, becoming part of the wider Hispanian society.     Abstract: Dieses Buch greift ein zentrales, aber wenig beachtetes Thema im Werk Hannah Arendts auf: ihr ambivalentes Verhältnis zum jüdisch-christlichen Erbe. Schon in ihrer Dissertation über den Liebesbegriff bei Augustinus entwickelte sie die Hauptmomente ihrer Lesart. Arendts starkes Konzept der »Weltlichkeit« könnte gerade heute hilfreich sein für einen Ausgleich zwischen Säkularismus und dem offenkundigen Fortwirken religiöser Überzeugungen. Obschon Arendt sich erklärtermaßen als säkulare Denkerin verstand, öffnet ihr Werk Perspektiven einer neuen, vielleicht sogar messianischen Haltung zur Weltlichkeit und Endlichkeit des Lebens. In einer berühmten Formulierung der Vita activa charakterisiert sie diese mit den Worten »Vertrauen« und »Hoffnung«.
    Abstract: This volume offer a manifold approach to a less evident and until now much neglected undercurrent in the work of Hannah Arendt., namely her ambiguous relation to the Judeo-Christian relligious heritage. Arendt's dissertation was dedicated to the concept of love in the works of Augustine, where she set her tone and developmed her frame for approaching theological matters. Her understanding of secularity might provide a model for the reconciliation of secularization and the persistence of religious belief in the contemporary world. Thought Hannah Arendt wad certainly and outspokenly a secular thinker, her work also harbors ways of understanding secularization as the possibility of a new, maybe even messianic, attitude towards finite life and earthly reality. She famously depicts this attitude as "faith in and hope for the world". --Book cover

    Abstract: ›Niedergang‹ oder ›Aufstieg‹ – zwischen diesen beiden Polen wurden bereits in der frühen ›Rassenhygiene‹ oder ›Eugenik‹ verschiedene Positionen eingenommen und Handlungsvorschläge unterbreitet, wie die sog. ›Entartung‹ der gesamten modernen ›Kulturmenschheit‹ aufgehalten bzw. deren sog. ›Höherzüchtung‹ vorangetrieben werden könnte. Die vorgeschlagenen Maßnahmen reichten dabei von reduzierter Hilfeleistung für sog. ›Schwache‹, über Heiratsförderungen oder -verbote und Zwangssterilisation bis hin zur staatlich gesteuerten Fortpflanzung der Menschen. Dies hatte zur Folge, dass sich zum Ende des 19. und am Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts auch in Deutschland eine erhebliche Bandbreite an ›rassenhygienischer‹ Literatur entwickelte, welche die Grundlage der vorliegenden Diskursanalyse bildet. “Decline“ or “rise” – between these two poles of the early “Rassenhygiene” or “Eugenik” different positions and recommendations were proposed for the prevention of the so-called “Entartung” of the modern “Kulturmenschheit” or the promotion of the so-called “Höherzüchtung”. The suggested agendas covered limited assistance for so-called “weak”, special facilitation or ban of marriage and forced sterilization to the point of state-controlled reproduction of human beings. As a consequence, by the end of the 19th and at the beginning of the 20th century an extensive variety of “rassenhygienischer” literature emerged in Germany forming the basis for the present discourse analysis.

    Abstract: This book is the completest work about life and works of Joseph Penso de Vega, the most prominent author of the Jewish Community of Amsterdam in the XVIIth century. This volume presents a very interdisciplinary study, because of the frequent contacts that the writer had among diasporas and the cultural relationship with Christians and laics. That meant a very intense cultural and literary exchange that Penso knew to represent it in his texts. In this sense, this study offers a very exact portrait –never made before–, not only about his cultural production but also about him as nexus between diasporas concerning religious aspects, History of culture and history of ideas, aspects ignored before but basics to understand his works.

    Abstract: This book sheds new light on the history of the sanctity of Jerusalem in Islam. It is noticed already in the Quran which describes Muhammad's vision of a nocturnal journey from the "sacred mosque" (al-masjid al-ḥarām) in Mecca to the "far-off mosque" (al-masjid al-aqṣā) namely, the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. In his night journey to the site of the demolished Temple, Muhammad signaled to his contemporary Jews the course of salvation in which already Moses had led the Children of Israel to their promised land. On the other hand, the Quran praises also the Abrahamic sanctity of Mecca, especially in sūras which reflect the polemical rift with the Jews who eventually refused to recognize Muhammad as their messianic savior. After the death of Muhammad, when the first Muslims came from Arabia to Palestine, their awareness of the Quranic sanctity of al-Masjid al-Aqṣā resurfaced. This book elucidates major aspects of the renewed and growing sanctity of Jerusalem and al-Sham at large, as reflected in the available Islamic traditions. These traditions show also how patterns of the sanctity of Jerusalem were eventually adapted to Mecca in reaction to the growing prestige of Jerusalem, especially during the Umayyad period

    Abstract: Klappentext: Im 17. und 18. Jahrhundert war Hamburg eine Hamburgs der Hochburgen europäischer Hebraistik. Das 1613 gegründete Akademische Gymnasium schuf Professuren für Hebraistik oder - umfassender noch - für Orientalistik. Ein Name wie Hermann Samuel Reimarus ist mit diesen verbunden. Der eine oder andere dieser Lehrenden wurde darüber hinaus Hauptpastor. Der promovierte Alttestamentler und Hauptpastor i. R. von St. Nikolai Ferdinand Ahuis hat die Nachlässe von neun seiner Vorgänger aus vier Jahrhunderten hinsichtlich deren Haltung gegenüber dem Judentum untersucht. Im vorliegenden Werk stellt er diese Persönlichkeiten vor, deren theologische Auslegungen des Alten Testaments die christliche Sicht auf das Judentum mitgeprägt haben. Das Werk schließt mit einem virtuellen Dialog zwischen Hauptpastor und Bibelwissenschaftler Heinz Beckmann und Rabbiner und Bibelwissenschaftler Benno Jacob.

    Abstract: This research deals with R. Zadok's innovative writings. According to most scholars R. Zadok continues the doctrine of his rabbi R. Mordechai Yosef Leiner of Izbica and introduces existential fatalism: man has the freedom to act against the customary law, according to God's will which is revealed in his heart, even in his passions, which exceed the Halacha; however, man does not determine the will that is revealed in the root of his soul, but only uncovers it. Many expressions, in content and form, of this fatalism can be found in R. Zadok's writings; yet, he also introduces many remarks about human free choice and its creative power to establish and determine man's root and re-establish and influence the Divine worlds and this world. This research focuses on these passages whose centrality has been so far neglected by research. Hence, its renewed understanding of his doctrine. R.     Abstract: This research concentrates on the investigation of the Responsa literature and the examination of attitudes of Jewish religious decisors towards artificial insemination (AI), as well as other reproductive technologies such as in-vitro fertilization (IVF), surrogacy and egg donation. The study attempts to elucidate the formation of Halacha on this question according to the Responsa literature starting from the Rishonim (the early authorities) period (11th till 15th centuries) and up to the Acharonim (the later authorities) period (from the 16th century and onwards), and concentrating primarily on the modern era and last century. The aim of this research is to examine the process of reasoning and decision making of religious authorities, dealing with the penetration of technological and scientific advancements into a closed and conservative society. Our analysis shows how rabbis are facing the conflict between medical and social necessity to access advanced medical treatments and fear of social transitions and religious implications, caused by such technologies. In addition to analysis of the Orthodox Responsa, this study surveys also the opinion of rabbis in Reform and Conservative Judaism.
    Abstract: מצוות הפריון הינה אחת מן המצוות החשובות ביהדות ומגדירה במובנים רבים את מהות קיומו של האדם היהודי הדתי. זוגות דתיים אשר סובלים מבעיית פריון נקרעים לא פעם בין מחוייבותם הדתית והלחץ החברתי בקהילתם לבין אי יכולתם להביא ילדים לעולם בדרך טבעית. החל מאמצע המאה ה 20- הפכו טכנולוגיות פריון רפואיות לנגישות לציבור הרחב בישראל ובעולם והובילו למהפכה חברתית אשר אפשרה לזוגות חשוכי ילדים להגשים את חלומם בפעם הראשונה ולהפוך להורים. פריצת דרך רפואית זו לא נעלמה מעיני הציבור הדתי על זרמיו השונים וגרמה לטלטלה בתפיסת עולמם של מנהיגיהם, אשר נדרשו לתת מענה הלכתי הולם המאזן בין רווחת קהילותיהם לבין שמירה על ערכי ומצוות הדת היהודית. על רקע תמורות אלו התפתח שיח הלכתי ואקדמי חשוב ומעניין באשר למקומה של טכנולוגיה מודרנית בחברה המתנהלת על פי קודים מסורתיים. עם זאת, הדיאלוג החי המתקיים בין מנהיגי היהדות לבין קהילותיהם, אשר מתועד כאוסף שאלות ותשובות (שו"ת) לבעיות הלכתיות אקטואליות בתחום הפריון, לא נחקר דיו. עבודתנו עוסקת במחקר ספרות השו"ת ובגישת פוסקי ההלכה להסתייעות בטכנולוגיית ההזרעה המלאכותית ובטיפולי פוריות חדשניים נוספים שהתפתחו בעקבותיה כגון הפריה חוץ גופית, פונדקאות ותרומת ביציות. העבודה סוקרת את התגבשות ועיצוב ההלכה בשאלה זו, כפי שעולה מספרות השו"ת החל מתקופת הראשונים (המאות ה 11- עד ה- 16 ) ועד לפוסקים מתקופת האחרונים (המאה ה- 16 ואילך), ומתמקדת בעיקר בתקופה המודרנית של המאה האחרונה. במרכז העבודה יעמדו מעמדם ההלכתי של האם והוולד בעקבות שימוש בהזרעה והפריה מלאכותית וכן השלכותיהן ההלכתיות של השימוש הרפואי בזרע. תרומתו של מחקר זה הינה בהצגת וניתוח התמודדות הפוסקים עם העימות הערכי וההלכתי שמעוררות תמורות במבנה המשפחה ובדפוסי הורות מסורתיים כתוצאה משימוש הולך וגובר בטכנולוגיות פריון מתקדמות בחברה המודרנית. יתר על כן, מחקר זה מרחיב את הדיון ההלכתי אל מעבר לעמדות הפוסקים ביהדות האורתודוקסית, הנצמדים לעקרונות ההלכה ההיסטורית, ומציג לראשונה אף את קשת הדעות של רבנים המשתייכים לזרמי היהדות המתקדמת והקונסרבטיבית, הדוגלים בפיתוח ההלכה והתאמתה למציאות החיים המשתנה. כך, מעניקה עבודת מחקר זו תמונה שלמה ומקיפה יותר באשר להתמודדות הרבנים עם שאלת ההזרעה המלאכותית ומציגה את רב גוניותה של ההלכה כפי שמשתקפת בזרמי היהדות השונים בישראל ובתפוצות.

    Abstract: Zentrales Anliegen der Dissertation ist, Zeugenschaft als visuelle Strategie zu beleuchten. In Abgrenzung zur These der Undarstellbarkeit der Shoah wird der Begriff der Sichtbarmachung nutzbar gemacht, um Prozesse und die Wirkung von Bildern im Zusammenhang mit Zeugenschaft herauszustellen. Ausgangspunkt dabei ist, dass bildliche Zeugnisse einen Gegenpol zu den standardisierten Visualisierungspraktiken der Shoah bieten, sprich dem historischen Bildmaterial aufgenommen durch die Alliierten und der Nationalsozialisten. In der Arbeit wird das historische Bildmaterial als Visualisierungspraxis problematisiert und visuellen Zeugnissen gegenübergestellt, die Augen- und Überlebenszeugen der Shoah, aber auch authentische Orte des Geschehens aus einer nachträglichen Perspektive zeigen.     Abstract: The attitude of Jews living in the medieval Christian world to Jews who converted to Christianity or to Christians seeking to join the Jewish faith reflects the central traits that make up Jewish self-identification. The Jews saw themselves as a unique group chosen by God, who expected them to play a specific and unique role in the world. This study researches fully for the first time the various aspects of the way European Jews regarded members of their own fold in the context of lapses into another religion. It attempts to understand whether they regarded the issue of conversion with self-confidence or with suspicion, and whether their attitude was based on a clear theological position, or on issues of socialisation. The book will primarily interest students and lecturers of Jewish/Christian relations, the Middle Ages, Jews in the Medieval period, and inter-religious research.

    Abstract: Main description: Der Staatssekretär im Reichsministerium des Innern Wilhelm Stuckart (1902-1953) war einer der wichtigsten juristischen Interpreten und Legitimatoren des NS-Staates. Als Mit-Autor der Nürnberger Rassegesetze goss er dessen biologistische Grundlagen in Gesetze und begleitete später die Vorbereitungen zum Genozid. Im Frühjahr 1942 vertrat er auf der Endlösungskonferenz am Wannsee sein Ressort. Nach dem Krieg gehörte Stuckart zu den Schöpfern der Legende von der "sauberen Verwaltung", die sich den rassistischen Ansprüchen der NS-Machthaber widersetzt habe. Die biographische Auseinandersetzung mit Stuckart belegt nicht nur die prägende Funktion von führenden Juristen in der NS-Verwaltung, sie untersucht auch die Rolle der Innenverwaltung und ihre Mitwirkung am Genozid.

    Abstract: Die vorliegende Untersuchung verfolgt das Ziel, kulturelle und religiöse Aspekte der Erneuerung jüdischen Lebens in Berlin seit 1989 zu erforschen. Die Entwicklungen der jüdischen Gemeinschaft in der Hauptstadt seit dem Fall der Mauer und dem Zusammenbruch der Sowjetunion führen zur Wiederannäherung eines Teils der jüdischen Bevölkerung in Deutschland an die eigene Kultur, Religion und Geschichte. Dabei kommt die Pluralität der kulturellen, literarischen und religiösen Ausdrucksformen der jüdischen Identitäten zum Vorschein. Die Arbeit verdeutlicht diese in Berlin nach 1989 einsetzende kulturelle und religiöse „Renaissance“. Vier wichtige Punkte kennzeichnen das jüdische Leben in Berlin nach 1989. Erstens gewinnt Deutschland seit der Wiedervereinigung eine neue Rolle als mögliches Einwanderungsland für Juden. Vor allem mit der massiven jüdischen Einwanderung aus den Staaten der ehemaligen Sowjetunion seit den 1990er Jahren wird Deutschland allmählich als wichtiges Zentrum in der europäischen Diaspora anerkannt.…

    Abstract: Wie Maimonides auf den Aristotelismus seiner Zeit sucht Krochmal auf die geschichtstheoretischen, idealistischen Entwürfe deutscher, protestantischer Gelehrter am Ausgang des 18. Jahrhunderts eine jüdische Antwort zu geben. Darüber hinaus ist ihm an einer Integration gegensätzlicher jüdischer Geistesströmungen gelegen. Die idealistischen Philosophien, die er autodidaktisch und vermittelt durch populäre Geschichtswerke studierte, sahen im Judentum eine überkommene Religion entsprechend der von Herder geprägten geschichtstheoretischen Behauptung, ein Volk könne nur eine Zeit der Blüte haben. Krochmal sucht dieses Paradigma seiner Zeit philosophisch begründet zu widerlegen. Zu diesem Zweck entwirft er nicht nur eine "Konstruktion" der Geschichte im Sinne einer Graetzschen Dialektik der Aufeinanderfolge von Auf und Ab, sondern versucht einen Nachweis des die Geschichte Israels und das Volk Verbindenden zu führen. An einen vordialektischen Hegel, den "große(n) deutsche(n) Philosoph(en)", anknüpfend, entwickelt er eine undialektische, lineare Geschichtsphilosophie des Volkes Israel. Nach Krochmal hat das Volk zwar Anteil am allgemeinen Zyklus der Völkergeschichte. Es unterscheidet sich jedoch von den anderen Völkern hinsichtlich seiner Teilhabe am "absoluten Geist". Dieser Geist wird von Krochmal im rabbinischen Sinne mit der "Shechina", mit der "Einwohnung Gottes", identifiziert, die mit dem Volk, wie im rabbinischen Midrasch beschrieben, in die Verbannung und in alle weiteren Tiefen und Höhen der geschichtlichen Entwicklung gezogen ist.

The approximately 1,100 texts have been arranged in categories based on three epochs: up to the destruction of Jerusalem in the year 70, to the beginning of the 4th century, and to the end of Byzantine rule in the 7th century.

    Abstract: Die Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit dem sozialen Engagement der seit Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts entstandenen Leipziger bürgerlichen jüdischen Frauenvereine, welche sich in der Ortsgruppe des Jüdischen Frauenbundes zusammenfanden und benachteiligte, vor allem weibliche ostjüdische Zuwanderer in speziellen Problemlagen bis zum Ende der Weimarer Republik unterstützten. Sozial-, stadt-, bürgertums-, vereins- und frauengeschichtliche Perspektiven wurden dazu zusammengeführt. Die Untersuchung basiert auf Quellenbeständen des Stadtarchives Leipzig, des Sächsischen Staatsarchives Leipzig, vor allem aber auf der Auswertung zeitgenössischer Periodika.
    Abstract: This paper deals with the social dedication of the Jewish women`s associations of Leipzig formed since the mid-19th-century and united in the location group of the Jüdischer Frauenbund and suporting discriminated mostly female Eastern Jewish immigrants in special problematic situations until the end of the Weimar Republic. For that purpose, perspectives of social, urban, middle class and women`s history are involved. The description is based on existing sources of the Stadtarchiv Leipzig, the Sächsisches Staatsarchiv Leipzig, but first of all on the analysis of contemporary periodicals.

    Abstract: Russian Jews who left the Former Soviet Union (FSU) and its Successor States after 1989 are considered as one of the best qualified migrants group worldwide. In the preferred countries of destination (Israel, the United States and Germany) they are well-known for cultural self-assertion, strong social upward mobility and manifold forms of self organisation and empowerment. Using Suzanne Kellers sociological model of “Strategic Elites”, it easily becomes clear that a huge share of the Russian Jewish Immigrants in Germany and Israel are part of various elites due to their qualification and high positions in the FSU – first of all professional, cultural and intellectual elites (“Intelligentsija”). The study aimed to find out to what extent developments of cultural self-assertion, of local and transnational networking and of ethno-cultural empowerment are supported or even initiated by the immigrated (Russian Jewish) Elites. The empirical basis for this study have been 35 half-structured expert interviews with Russian Jews in both countries (Israel, Germany) – most of them scholars, artists, writers, journalists/publicists, teachers, engineers, social workers, students and politicians. The qualitative analysis of the interview material in Israel and Germany revealed that there are a lot of commonalities but also significant differences. It was obvious that almost all of the interview partners remained to be linked with Russian speaking networks and communities, irrespective of their success (or failure) in integration into the host societies. Many of them showed self-confidence with regard to the groups’ amazing professional resources (70% of the adults with academic degree), and the cultural, professional and political potential of the FSU immigrants was usually considered as equal to those of the host population(s). Thus, the immigrants’ interest in direct societal participation and social acceptance was accordingly high. Assimilation was no option. For the Russian Jewish “sense of community” in Israel and Germany, Russian Language, Arts and general Russian culture have remained of key importance. The Immigrants do not feel an insuperable contradiction when feeling “Russian” in cultural terms, “Jewish” in ethnical terms and “Israeli” / “German” in national terms – in that a typical case of additive identity shaping what is also significant for the Elites of these Immigrants. Tendencies of ethno-cultural self organisation – which do not necessarily hinder impressing individual careers in the new surroundings – are more noticeable in Israel. Thus, a part of the Russian Jewish Elites has responded to social exclusion, discrimination or blocking by local population (and by local elites) with intense efforts to build (Russian Jewish) Associations, Media, Educational Institutions and even Political Parties. All in all, the results of this study do very much contradict popular stereotypes of the Russian Jewish Immigrant as a pragmatic, passive “Homo Sovieticus”. Among the Interview Partners in this study, civil-societal commitment was not the exception but rather the rule. Traditional activities of the early, legendary Russian „Intelligentsija“ were marked by smooth transitions from arts, education and societal/political commitment. There seem to be certain continuities of this self-demand in some of the Russian Jewish groups in Israel. Though, nothing comparable could be drawn from the Interviews with the Immigrants in Germany. Thus, the myth and self-demand of Russian “Intelligentsija” is irrelevant for collective discourses among Russian Jews in Germany.
