Abstract:
Analyzes levels of antisemitism in the Canadian population, based on data from the 1984 National Election Study. While 14% of the nation held negative attitudes toward Jews, the provinces of Newfoundland, New Brunswick, and Quebec had a much higher average (21-29%). French-speaking Catholics tend to be more antisemitic, as well as persons from lower social classes and the less educated. The prognosis is good for a tolerant Canadian attitude toward Jews, except for Quebec. See criticism of this article by Simon Langlois ["Canadian Journal of Sociology" 17 (1992) 175-178] in which he accuses the authors of hasty generalizations, inadequate measurement of antisemitic opinion, as well as unreliable statistical analysis (e.g. the sample on Quebec was too small; other reliable studies show that antisemitism is not higher in Quebec than elsewhere in Canada). The authors refute these criticisms on pp. 179-183.
