    Kurzfassung: "The true story of a vigilante group of Holocaust survivors who conspired to kill six million Germans, Nakam (Hebrew for "vengeance") tells the story of "the Avengers" (Nokmim), a group of young Holocaust survivors led by poet and resistance fighter Abba Kovner, who undertook a mission of revenge against Germany following the crimes of the Holocaust. Motivated by both the atrocities they had endured and the realization that murderous antisemitic attacks on survivors continued long after the Nazi surrender, these fifty young men and women sought retaliation at a level commensurate with the devastation caused by the Holocaust, making clear to the world that Jewish blood would no longer be shed with impunity. Had they been successful, they would have poisoned city water supplies and loaves of bread distributed to German POWs, with the aim of killing six million Germans. Kovner and his followers went to great lengths to carry out their plans, going so far as to obtain the plans for Nuremberg's municipal water system, secure large quantities of poison, infiltrate a POW camp and the bakery that supplied it, and distribute poisoned bread to prisoners - but their plots were ultimately stymied. Most of the members of Nakam eventually returned to Israel, where for decades many of them refused to speak publicly about their roles in the group. While the Avengers' story began to come to light in the 1980s, details of the relations between the group and Zionist leadership and the motivations of its members have remained unknown. Drawing on rich archival sources and in-depth interviews with the Avengers in their later years, historian Dina Porat examines the formation of the group and the clash between the formative humanistic values held by its members and their unrealized plans for violent retribution"--

From the Galician shtetl of Mościska (Mostyska)—now in Ukraine near the Polish border—the story follows a Jewish family through two World Wars, deportation to a labor camp under the Soviet regime, through Central Asia, the Middle East, to America. These are the lost worlds the author vividly brings to life. Holding onto Jewish tradition in the darkest of places, surviving mass, grave human rights violations. 80% of Polish Jews, who survived the Second World War, did so through the Soviet Union. Meier Landau and his family escaped Germans, but were deported by the Soviets from Lviv, along with thousands of other Jewish families. This is their story—prisoners in a world so strange, it is almost unbelievable to them.     Kurzfassung: The book investigates and compares the role of artistic and academic refugees from National Socialism acting as "cultural mediators" or "agents of knowledge" between their origin and host societies. By doing so, it locates itself at the intersection of the recently emerging field of the history of knowledge, transnational history, migration, exile, as well as cultural transfer studies. The case studies provided in this volume are of global scope, focusing on routes of escape and migration to Iceland, Italy, the Near East, Portugal and Shanghai, and South-, Central-, and North America. The chapters examine the hybrid ways refugees envisaged, managed, organized, and subsequently mediated their migrations. It focuses on how they dealt with their escape in their art and science. The chapters ask how the emigrants located themselves--did they associate with ethnic, religious, and/or cultural affiliations, specific social classes, or specific parts of society-and how such identifications were portrayed in their knowledge transfer and cultural translations. Building on such possible avenues for research, this volume aims to offer a global analysis of the multifarious processes not only of cultural translation and knowledge transfer affecting culture, sciences, networks, but also everyday life in different areas of the world

    Kurzfassung: Although the Enlightenment had seemed to bring an end to the widely held belief that Jews murdered Christian children for ritual purposes, charges of the so-called blood libel were surprisingly widespread in central and eastern Europe on either side of the turn to the twentieth century. Well over one hundred accusations were made against Jews in this period, and prosecutors and government officials in Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Russia broke with long established precedent to bring six of these cases forward in sensational public trials. In Blood Inscriptions Hillel J. Kieval examines four cases-the prosecutions that took place at Tiszaeszlár in Hungary (1882-83), Xanten in Germany (1891-92), Polná in Austrian Bohemia (1899-1900), and Konitz, then Germany, now in Poland (1900-1902)-to consider the means by which discredited beliefs came to seem once again plausible.Kieval explores how educated elites took up the accusations of Jewish ritual murder and considers the roles played by government bureaucracies, the journalistic establishment, forensic medicine, and advanced legal practices in structuring the investigations and trials. The prosecutors, judges, forensic scientists, criminologists, and academic scholars of Judaism and other expert witnesses all worked hard to establish their epistemological authority as rationalists, Kieval contends. Far from being a throwback to the Middle Ages, these ritual murder trials were in all respects a product of post-Enlightenment politics and culture. Harnessed to and disciplined by the rhetoric of modernity, they were able to proceed precisely because they were framed by the idioms of scientific discourse and rationality

For nearly a century, Jewish lawyers and advocacy groups in Western Europe and the United States pioneered forms of international rights protection, tying the defense of Jews to norms and rules that aspired to curb the worst behavior of rapacious nation-states. In the wake of the Holocaust and the creation of the State of Israel, however, Jewish activists discovered they could no longer promote the same norms, laws and innovations without fear they could soon apply to the Jewish state. Bringing to light previously unexamined sources, this book examines the transformation of Jewish internationalism from an effort to constrain the power of nation-states to one focused on cementing Israel's legitimacy and its status as a haven for refugees from across the Jewish diaspora.     Kurzfassung: "In the aftermath of World War II, a succession of mass supernatural events swept through a war-torn Germany. As millions were afflicted by a host of seemingly incurable maladies (including blindness and paralysis), waves of apocalyptic rumors crashed over the land. A messianic faith healer rose to extraordinary fame, prayer groups performed exorcisms, and enormous crowds traveled to witness apparitions of the Virgin Mary. Most strikingly, scores of people accused their neighbors of witchcraft, and found themselves in turn hauled into court on charges of defamation, assault, and even murder. What linked these events, in the wake of an annihilationist war and the Holocaust, was a widespread preoccupation with evil. While many histories emphasize Germany's rapid transition from genocidal dictatorship to liberal democracy, A Demon-Haunted Land places in full view the toxic mistrust, profound bitterness, and spiritual malaise that unfolded alongside the economic miracle. Drawing from a set of previously unpublished archival materials, acclaimed historian Monica Black argues that the surge of supernatural obsessions stemmed from the unspoken guilt and shame of a nation remarkably silent about what was euphemistically called "the most recent past." This shadow history irrevocably changes our view of postwar Germany, revealing the country's fraught emotional life, deep moral disquiet, and the cost of trying to bury a horrific legacy."

Kurz nach der Staatsgründung Israels im Mai 1948 berichtete er für mehrere Monate für eine Reihe von Zeitungen aus dem Land, gegen das die Nachbarländer unmittelbar nach der Unabhängigkeit den Krieg erklärt hatten und führte Tagebuch. Die in diesem Band enthaltenen chronologischen Aufzeichnungen aus dieser Zeit sind Teil eines 1949 auf Englisch erschienenen Buches und liegen erstmals auf Deutsch vor. Mit kritischer Distanz, um Ausgewogenheit bemüht, berichtet er vom Krieg, von seinen Reisen durchs Land, von den Leuten, denen er begegnet. - Ein Zeitdokument, das unmittelbar und ausführlich Einblicke in die ersten Monate des jungen Staates und den israelischen Unabhängigkeitskrieg gibt und vor allem für diejenigen, die sich tiefer mit der konfliktreichen Geschichte Israels beschäftigen wollen, von Interesse sein könnte.     Kurzfassung: "Ein Zionist schreibt mit außergewöhnlicher Beobachtungsgabe über den Häftlingsalltag im Ungarnlager des KZ Bergen-Belsen. Jeno Kolbs in ungarischer Sprache verfasstes Tagebuch zählt zu den umfangreichsten Häftlingstagebüchern aus dem Konzentrationslager Bergen-Belsen. Zugleich stellt es als eines von wenigen Tagebüchern die Struktur, das Verhalten und die Zukunftserwartungen der Häftlingsgesellschaft aus einer dezidiert zionistischen Perspektive dar. Neben der Schilderung der sich stetig verschlechternden Lebensbedingungen im KZ Bergen-Belsen von Juli bis Dezember 1944 bietet es bemerkenswerte Einblicke in die unterschiedlichsten Formen der Selbstbehauptung der Häftlinge im sogenannten Ungarnlager. Hier waren fast 1700 Juden aus Ungarn interniert, die schließlich dank der Verhandlungen zwischen ungarischen Zionisten (vertreten vor allem durch Rezso Kasztner) und der SS bis Ende 1944 freigelassen wurden. Kolbs Tagebuch beschreibt auch eine der erfolgreichsten Rettungsaktionen in der Geschichte des Holocaust. Es wird - im ungarischen Original und in deutscher Übersetzung -erstmals veröffentlicht. Die Essays zum historischen Hintergrund des Tagebuchs sind ebenfalls in deutscher und ungarischer Sprache verfasst." (Verlagsinformation)

    Kurzfassung: Die erstmals vollständig übersetzten, auf verschlungenen Wegen überlieferten Lagerberichte Salmen Gradowski über seine Tätigkeit für das zur Hilfe bei den Vergasungen abgestellte jüdische Sonderkommando in Auschwitz sind eine verzweifelte Anklage und Anrufung der Menschheit. Rezension (ekz): Niemand stand in Auschwitz so im Zentrum der Vernichtung wie die meist jüdischen Mitglieder des zur Unterstützung der SS abgestellten Sonderkommandos. Ihre erhaltenen, oft auf verschlungenen Pfaden überlieferten Lagerberichte liegen gesammelt jetzt in "Briefe aus der Hölle" vor (...). Die bedeutendsten davon präsentiert diese mustergültige wissenschaftliche Edition. In einer bewegenden, kaum zu ertragenden Anklage, die sich zu einem literarisch verdichteten Appell an die Nachgeborenen steigert, hielt der aus Suwalki stammende, 1942 mit seiner Familie nach Auschwitz deportierte S. Gradowski detailgenau fest, was dort geschah und was das Sonderkommando zu tun hatte: Die Opfer für die Gaskammern vorzubereiten und die Leichen zu verbrennen. Im Anhang Faksimiles, Bibliografie. - Gradowskis verzweifelte Anrufung der Menschheit liegt hier erstmals vollständig in neuer Übersetzung vor. In Vor- und Nachworten informiert die Herausgeberin über Autor und Editionsgeschichte sowie Aufgaben und (oft kritische) Wahrnehmung des Sonderkommandos und reflektiert die Geschichte solcher zu Literatur erhobener Zeugnisse.     Kurzfassung: Verlagsinfo: Mordechai Strigler schuf mit seiner Buchreihe "Verloschene Lichter" ein literarisches Denkmal für die Opfer der Schoah. Nach "Majdanek" und "In den Fabriken des Todes" erscheint nun der dritte Teil in deutscher Erstausgabe. Kurz nach seiner Befreiung aus dem Konzentrationslager Buchenwald im April 1945 begann Mordechai Strigler, seine Erfahrungen in den Lagern des besetzten Polens literarisch zu verarbeiten. Schonungslos wie kaum ein anderer Überlebender beschreibt er die Lagerorganisation und das Lagerleben sowie den Umgang der jüdischen Gefangenen untereinander. In "Werk C" schildert Strigler die Monate von September 1943 bis März 1944 im Arbeitslager Skarzysko-Kamienna, das vom Leipziger Rüstungsunternehmen HASAG AG betrieben wurde. Dabei zeigt er - anders als im Vorgängerband - weniger die Produktionsbedingungen auf, sondern konzentriert sich auf einzelne Personen, Beziehungen und Begebenheiten. Er beschreibt sowohl den Alltag im Lager als auch aussergewöhnliche Umstände wie Geburten oder das von den Gefangenen ersonnene Prostitutionsmodell. Da er mit der Zeit in 'privilegiertere' Kreise der jüdischen Lagerverwaltung aufstieg, kann er auch über die 'mittlere Verwaltungsebene' sowie die Organisation des gesellschaftlichen Lagerlebens berichten und ein detailliertes Porträt der Funktionshäftlinge im Arbeitslager liefern.
