Abstract:
Discusses universalist and particularist approaches to the Holocaust, noting that the American view is universalist, since most of the victims of World War II were not Jews. Hilberg's "The Destruction of the European Jews" (1961) follows the universalist approach, focusing on the perpetrators. One of the main points of his research, as in that of Franz Neumann, is that German rejection of international law and legal equality was the first step in the process of destruction. While the Nuremberg Trials reflected the universalist approach, the Eichmann trial in 1961 reflected the Israeli particularist or victim-centered approach and it was, therefore, criticized by both Hilberg and Arendt. Contends that both approaches are relevant and can be reconciled within universalization of the Holocaust.
