Abstract:
Presents an overview of Holocaust historiography from the 1940s to the present. States that the Holocaust has developed as a separate field of study; it needs to be reintegrated into the study of history. Holocaust historiography can be divided into three main areas of focus: the perpetrators, the victims, and the bystanders. The latter have received the least attention so far. Describes the sources for research (official, public, or private documents), difficulties they pose for the researcher (e.g. accessibility, reliability, existence or non-existence of types of material), and interpretation of the material, giving examples of works by German, American, and Jewish historians. See the response by Sara Shner-Neshamit [in "Dapim le-Heker Tekufat ha-Shoah" 8 (1990) 217-227], in which she comments on Hilberg's disregard of historiography and sources in languages other than German, English, and French - mainly sources originating in Eastern Europe, but also in Italy and and Israel - which refer also, but not only, to an integral part of Holocaust history: the anti-Nazi resistance and the Jewish resistance fighters. She also comments on his neglect of oral history, works of art, literary works and artifacts found at the extermination sites, all of which also illuminate the history of the Holocaust.
