Abstract:
Discusses how CD-ROM material may be used to teach the Holocaust to 15-16-year-olds in Britain. Stresses the need for a balance between the extreme of too many facts and statistics (that leads to desensitization) and too graphic an approach (that leads to traumatization). Recommends that teachers make use of CD programs by assigning focused tasks that require personal reflection and involvement; provides sample questions as models. Evaluates three CD-ROMs as Holocaust resources. Recommends the encyclopedia "Encarta '97" as a research tool, but notes its lack of emotional impact. "World War II: Sources and Analysis" is not recommended; it is misleading in a number of areas and adds nothing to previous sources. "Lest We Forget, " which is wholly devoted to the Holocaust, is highly recommended. It combines statistics with faces of victims, and discusses topics ignored elsewhere, e.g. responses by Jews and non-Jews (including rescuers) to the persecution of Jews, and Holocaust denial.
