Abstract:
Chagall's painting "White Crucifixion" (1938) depicts a Jesus-like figure on a cross, draped with a "talit" and with a sign over his head which reads INRI (Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews). In the background are depictions of recent events in Nazi Germany (book and synagogue burnings, public labeling of Jews, etc.). Chagall sought to call the attention of Christians to the persecution of Jews in Germany. Discusses several interpretations of the work. Between 1940 and the 1980s, interpretations varied regarding the painting's significance for Christianity and its response to the Holocaust.
