Abstract:
The statements about the Jews in John 8:44 and 8:47, "you are of your father the devil" and "you are not of God, " have served as a major source of antisemitism over the ages. Bondi, a Catholic priest, aware of the Church's desire that John's "passion narrative" should not be used to justify antisemitism, suggests that it be understood in its historical context. John used rhetorical techniques common to his time, and wrote when the Christians were a small minority among a large, secure Jewish majority. His words are antisemitic but not in a racial way, though today's readers might mistakenly think otherwise. Since the Gospel of John will not be deleted from the Christian canon, efforts must continue to neutralize its potential for promoting antisemitism.
