Abstract:
Describes the Kishinev pogrom as witnessed by the writer Vladimir Korolenko, and analyzes its background: the influence of the Church, Russian and Moldovan nationalism, the economic crisis, the government's fear of socialism and its use of the Jews as scapegoats. Incitement in the press, especially in the daily "Bessarabets", published by the militant antisemite Pavolaki Krushevan, and a blood libel in a neighboring town also contributed to the chain of events.
