Abstract:
Discusses the Holocaust film "Sotvorenie liubvi" (literally "The Creation of Love"; in the article, apparently translated from Romanian, the title is given as "The Illusion of Love". The film, directed by Valeriu Jereghi, was based on Iacov Tihman's 2005 Russian-language novel "Motl, the Matchmaker", published in Kishinev. The film depicts the Holocaust in Tihman's hometown of Zinkov, Ukraine, highlighting the mass murder of the Jews by the Nazis and their local henchmen. While Motl is with the Soviet army fighting the Germans, his wife and children are rounded up and burned to death with one hundred other Jews. One character is a Romanian, who saves two Jewish neighbors. After the war Motl marries a woman for whom he had arranged a marriage just before the war, but whose fiancé was killed; they have children, thus providing some continuity and hope for the future. Stresses the ethical issue raised by the film, i.e. resistance to or collaboration with evil.
